The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea {a review}

Why hello there reader friends,
You may have noticed that I was missing last week, and no reviews were posted. I feel terrible about that. I do. My husband was off from work for the week, my kids were gone with the grandparents for a few days, and we were busy working on updating the exterior of our house. New paint went on, new shutters were built, and cedar shakes were hung. It was a busy week, and I spent very little time on my computer and/or phone. Now things are back to "normal", and I can start writing (and sharing) my reviews with you all!

Let's kick off my return by talking about The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by Amelia Wilde. This is the first book in The Devil trilogy, and it is a contemporary PIRATE ROMANCE! Yes, you read that correctly. Pirates. I'm here for it.

Before I go into my little recap, let me start by saying this book ends in a cliffhanger! So be prepared for that by having A Deal with the Devil on hand. In The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea we meet Ashley and Poseidon. Ashley is a college student who is out on a yacht with her boyfriend, Robbie. Everything is going great until a group of men board their vessel. Robbie urges her to go hide, and says he will deal with it. Ashley does, but peeks out a window to watch the exchange. Turns out her boyfriend had some enemies, and unfortunately his life was taken. Before the men can grab her, she jumps off the yacht and into the ocean. Nevermind the fact that Ashley can't swim. A while later, Poseidon is traveling through the area, and gets an uncomfortable feeling. He and the sea communicate with each other, and he is immediately on edge. It is then that he sees a person in the water. Poseidon jumps off his ship, and goes to assist who ever this is. He is shocked to find a woman out in the middle of the ocean, and brings her aboard his ship. Once aboard, Poseidon and his crew work to bring Ashley back to health, do some recon on this woman and eventually contact her father for ransom. After all he's a multi-millionaire, so he can afford it.

Yall, this book had me sucked in from the beginning. Yes it has dark romance tendencies. Yes it has some suspense. Yes there is also some consensual non-consent happening. Yes, our hero is a bit of an ass, but he's a pirate with issues. Yes, this is an opposites attract romance. And yes I loved every single minute of it. And that cliffhanger? Ooh. Yeah. I love a good cliffhanger.  So good. When I read the book I didn't realize that it was a spinoff of two other series that feature Zeus and Hades. Part of me wants to go back and read those, but I also know I my TBR is getting out of hand. Oh who am I kidding, I'm totally adding these to my list. So one thing I didn't touch on is that The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea talks about Poseidon's past. It brings us back to his childhood, and we witness a lot of hurt, anger, pain, and abuse. Poseidon has been through a lot and it honestly has made him the man he is today. And there is a scene in the series that will bring it all back. It will be hard to read about. Knowing what Poseidon has been through, and how the sea is his home, helped me to understand him a bit better. No, he's not a nice man, but he has potential for a redemption arc.

Do I recommend the book/series? Oh abso-freakin-lutely I do! I loved the book, and could not put it down. Amelia Wilde has hooked me in, and I am not complaining one bit. Go grab The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Just trust me.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,
Laura

A modern-day pirate.
An heiress lost at sea.
And the treasure of a lifetime.

He’s beautiful. Calculating. Cruel. And he’s taken me hostage.

When pirates board my boyfriend's yacht, I jump overboard to save myself. Drifting asea. Until one man rescues me from the endless ocean.

Except he has plans of his own. I'm worth too much money for ransom. He'll keep me on his ship and in his bed. The real danger lies in his dark-depth eyes. He wants more from me than money. Than passion. He wants everything.

He rescued me, but I'm far from safe.

There's an entire sea of danger threatening to drag me under.
