Affliction by JL Stray {a review}

There's a new addition to the Salvation Society series!

Affliction by J.L. Stray just released, and it was pretty darn good. If you're wondering about the familiar faces that will appear, it is Catherine, Jackson, and a few guys from Cole Security. I will tell you that Jackson and crew do not make an appearance until the second half of the story. Meanwhile Catherine is there from the beginning.

In this second chance romance we meet Mia and Terry. Mia has followed her passions and has opened up her own shoe company. And this company is very successful. So much so that they have a photo shoot and interview coming up with InStyle! One thing Mia doesn't know is that Terry has been asked to be the photographer. Terry and Mia have quite the history. They were in a serious relationship for many years, and all was going well, until the day Terry took a job in London. That lead to heartbreak, anger, frustration, and loneliness. During their 5 year separation, Terry and Mia would see each other at events, but never talked. They always stayed away from each other. Now here we are 5 years later, and these two are about to spend a lot of time together. A bit of forced proximity with a connection that cannot be denied is going to lead to a reunion. Or is it? Someone from Mia's past is determined to not let that happen.

You all know that I love a second chance romance. It is one of my favorite tropes, and I love to see people fall back in love with each other. It makes me happy. I gave Affliction 3.5 stars on Goodreads. For me it was a decent story, but I didn't feel the draw. This story wasn't calling to me for the first half of the book. It felt slow. It didn't grab my attention, and to be honest I didn't feel the connection between Terry and Mia. Yes they have history together, but it just wasn't working for me. I say that only to go on and say that I enjoyed the second half of the book. I know, I know. But you see the second half is when the suspense kicks in. It is when things start happening, and Jackson's crew is brought in. It is also during this time that we have our dramatic moment between Terry and Mia. I understand why Mia did what she did, but I'm with Hawkeye on this one, and it didn't need to happen. Also, I find myself wondering if J.L. Stray named the villain Chad because of the tiktok moment that happened in September. (Chad made a video about the romance genre, and well the romance readers came for him.) At the end of the day, I am glad that Terry and Mia had their HEA. They overcame a lot to get to that point.

There is a trigger warning for this book! If domestic violence is a trigger for you, then bypass this book. It is a minor element to the story, but it is definitely there.

If you've been around my blog for any length of time, then you know that I almost always recommend that you all read the books that I read. I truly believe that ratings are so personal, and are influenced by various factors, so it's hard to take them at face value. Also, the mood that we are in when we read the book can affect the way we reflect on the book. So while I gave this book 3.5 stars, and said that the first half was slow moving, you may not feel the same way. You may think it's the best thing ever. That's the joy of reading a book, we all walk away with different thoughts and feelings about that story.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts on Affliction. I appreciate you stopping by, and I hope that you'll give the book a read.

Laura

~He wants me to remember and I want to forget he ever existed. The past holds too much pain.~

He left me with a simple, “I’m sorry I can’t.”

Now he’s back. And he’s everywhere. Showing up in all the places that we frequented, and invading the newly created normal I made for myself when he left me. His expertise has even been sought at my company, Shoegasm. Making it impossible to breathe without thinking of him and what could have been.

Terry should have stayed gone, I can’t be with him. Ghosts from the past, who afflicted so much pain, are back. And I can’t go down that road again, knowing Terry could end up hurt. This time it’s me who has to protect him.

Undaunted by Liz Durano {a review}

Are you ready for another new addition to the Salvation Society series? If os go check out UNDAUNTED by Liz Durano!  This new second chance romance features the familiar faces of Quinn Miller and Mark Dixon. This book is short and sweet, and if second chance is your trope, grab it NOW.

Trevor Hawthorne was a Navy SEAL until the day an explosion changed everything. He pushed himself in rehab so that he could come back just as strong, if not stronger than he was previously. Trevor just finished up a mission, and is on his way home. As soon as he arrives home, he runs into a familiar face in the elevator. Claudia. Trevor and Claudia had one night together before the deployment that changed his life. Now it's as though he's been given a second chance. Meanwhile Claudia is back in town to finish up the Physical Therapy program that she's taking so that she can graduate. She never expected to run back into Trevor, and to be honest it's shaken her a little bit. Can these two reconnect and have an actual relationship, or will distance affect them once again?

I was immediately taken by Trevor. There was something about this character that drew me in, and held on tight. Trevor and Claudia made a great couple, and I was invested in their story. From the characters, to the setting, to the story, I enjoyed every moment of it. Yes these two had their problems, but they worked through it. I loved all the dates that they went on. I loved the way their connection just ramped up. These two had quite the bond. I also really enjoyed how focused on school Claudia was. It showed that she was a strong intelligent woman, and she was determined to do what she needed to do so that she could graduate. I also loved how her family was by her side throughout it all encouraging her along the way. Loved it.

As I said above, this is a quick read, and honestly I read it in one sitting. If you enjoy a good second chance romance, go download this latest addition to the Salvation Society.

Thank you for reading my thoughts on the book,
Laura

It was the only life he knew... until it wasn't.

It's been a year since a Humvee accident changed Navy SEAL Trevor Hawthorne's life forever, the adrenaline rush that was the only life he knew now gone. In its place is a life where he'll have to constantly prove to everyone that he's as good as, if not better than the man he was before.

For Taos native Claudia Romero, life is about graduating from a demanding Physical Therapy program so she can show people back home that she's more than the girl who made a very public mistake so long ago. And with one more internship in Virginia Beach to complete, she's almost there.

But when she runs into the man she had a one-night-stand with a year and a half earlier, there's no denying that the attraction they felt that night is still there, stronger than ever.

But what happens when she learns he's no longer the same man he used to be? And with a job waiting for her in Taos as soon as she graduates, can she find room in her life for love?

Conceal by Danielle Pays {a review}

CONCEAL by Danielle Pays is a full-length standalone romantic suspense novel with no cliffhanger and a happily-ever-after. This book features these familiar faces: Jackson, Catherine, Ben Pryce (Hulk), Gretchen, and Mark. If you are looking for a second chance romance, then be sure to consider Conceal!

In this book, we have Cody. His current employer is sending him to a college campus where he will offer protective services to an employee. This employee has been apparently receiving threats after an unpopular budget cut occurred. Cody is hesitant about this job because 1) it's close to his hometown, and 2) he was supposed to attend this very college with Lucy. Really he doesn't want to risk running into her. So go figure, when he is at an event with his assignment, he spots Lucy in the background. A short while later Cody finds out that Lucy used to be married to the guy that Cody is now protecting. After talking with Joseph (his assignment), Cody immediately knows this guy isn't telling the complete truth. There is more to the story and he's determined to figure out what it is. And now, whatever it is Joseph is doing, is about to affect Lucy. Cody definitely won't let that happen. She may not be happy to see him, but he will protect her no matter what.

Okay, I know, that was a really brief description of the book. Here's the thing though, there are a lot of characters in this book, and then there is the who-dun-it aspect of the story. It's a lot. Then there's the relationship between Lucy and Cody, there's that little tidbit that Lucy's dad dropped, there's the fact that Cody is about to take another mission that will take him out of the US for a month. Plus What exactly is happening at that food pantry that clearly isn't a food pantry! If you're looking for a quick and easy read that is also a page turner, then I recommend reading Conceal by Danielle Pays. Small town romances are some of my favorites, and when you add in the suspense element, it just ramps up my enjoyment every single time. So it's of no surprise that I enjoyed this book so much. Love the setting, enjoyed the characters, and that storyline had me hooked. Let me just say one more thing...if you think you know who is behind everything that's happening, you may be surprised in the end. I was going through each character, trying to figure out their MO, and what their role was in all of this. At the end of the story, I was a bit surprised by who was revealed. That's all I'm saying.

You may be thinking, "Laura, you didn't even mention the relationship between Lucy and Cody". You're right, I didn't. It was the standard second chance romance situation, but with a class difference. Lucy had every right to be upset about what happened all those years ago. But she didn't know the full story. She didn't know what Cody had to deal with, and what he had lost. The decision he made to leave wasn't an easy one. That decision was made out of necessity. Never in a million years did he want to hurt her. It's just his financial situation was at the complete opposite end of hers. So things she was able to do, and afford, such as college, wasn't something within his financial means. The military offered that to him. So when Cody explained this to her, all these years later, it was as though she still struggled to comprehend what it was he was saying. She couldn't understand that he might have been embarrassed about everything. Plus, as we learn in the book, there is even more to Cody's story than what he initially knew. There were forces working against him. So no, I didn't mention their story, as their love story didn't really stick out to me. What stuck out to me was the suspense, and the mystery. That drove the story. It was the main feature, and the relationship was just a bonus.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts about Conceal. If you're a fan of romantic suspense I hope you'll consider giving this book a read.

Laura

~Cody~
I told myself I could walk away and never look back.

That was a lie.

As a former Navy SEAL, I work in protection services. My latest assignment puts me right next to my hometown.

Close to her.
Too close.

But nothing prepares me for the moment I see her again. Or the moment I discover the man I’m protecting is her ex-husband.

But when the threat extends to Lucy, I’ll do what it takes to keep her safe.

Even if she doesn’t want my protection.

Because now that I’ve seen her, I can’t let her go again.

~Lucy~
His leaving destroyed me.

I never thought I’d see him again.

Now he’s back, and if he thinks he can just barge back into my life, he has another thing coming.

He might be even sexier than he once was, and yeah, my heart might still ache for him. But I can’t forgive him for destroying me.

But when my jerk of an ex-husband entangles me in his criminal pursuits, I have no choice but to lean on Cody.

But leaning on him is dangerous for my heart.

Lethal {a review}

Lethal by Tara L Ames is the final book in this round of book releases for the Salvation Society series. And friends, this 8th edition has been SPECTACULAR! I cannot say enough good things about the series. To the people making the selections, kudos to you.

Lethal is a friends to lovers story with a whole lot of suspense/action. OH MY WORD. I loved it. It reminded me of the books by Susan Stoker. I could not put this book down. I was all in. Hook, line, and sinker.

Allow me to recap the story a bit. Cade and Jenn have been friends for the majority of their lives. Back in 2001, their lives were changed in an instant when they both lost their parents. They did their best to keep in touch, and keep that friendship alive. Fast forward twelve years, and they meet up at the cemetery. Jenn is sure that Cade isn't going to show, but as she's walking away she literally runs in to him. After visiting their parents graves, they go to the hotel where they have dinner and catch up on life. And that friends, is when things start to shift. We learn that Cade has been away in the military for years now, and Jenn recently graduated med school. To say they are at different places in their lives would be an understatement. We also learn that Jenn has been smitten with Cade since she was five years old, and she's wanting a romantic relationship with Cade. Meanwhile Cade doesn't do relationships. Something happens, and then we jump ahead 8 years. It is at this point where the suspenseful element is being set up.

I wasn't joking when I said I couldn't put the book down. Having read the teaser I was wondering how soon into the book Jenn would find herself in danger. I did have to wait a bit, but I enjoyed the build up to that part of the story. Also, I should say when that part did happen, I was caught off guard a bit for who was all involved. But once I thought on it, it just made sense in a way. There was so much action in this book. And the wondering of how it was all going to play out. I mean, it's a romance novel, so I knew an HEA was going to happen, but still. Speaking of the romance, it is totally there, and quite steamy. Yes, there were times where I found myself getting a bit annoyed by Cade, but I get why he acted how he did.

I absolutely loved Lethal, and cannot wait to read more by Tara L. Ames.

If you are a fan of military romances or romantic suspense, then I'm telling you that you need to read Lethal. Just trust me on this.

Thanks for reading my thoughts,

Gravity {a review}

While reading a book have you ever been so shocked at a scene that you literally gasped out loud? Because that happened to me while reading Gravity. I mean, my hand was even over my mouth I was so shocked.

Gravity by K.L. Jessop is the latest release in the Salvation Society series, and it was spectacular. So much so that I gave it 5 stars. If you've been following along, then you'll know that's my second 5 star this month, and both of them went to a book within the Salvation Society series.

Gravity has one of my favorite tropes in play, and another that I'm coming around to. In this book we have the best friends sibling trope, and it is also an age gap romance. The age gap is about 15 years. So if age gap romances aren't your jam, that's okay, but I still really feel like you should give it a read.

Oh it's also a slow burn!

In this book we have Nora, Asher, and Grayson. Asher is extremely protective of his little sister, and feels that he needs to be in every part of her life to keep her safe. To say this annoys Nora would be an understatement. Grayson is Asher's best friend, and he'd do anything for Asher and Nora. Grayson and Nora have always had a connection. From the time she was little until now, there has been a bond between them. Flash forward to modern day, and Nora is returning home from college. She's determined to spend time with her dad (he just had a stroke), and help out as much as possible. Nora's also hoping to reconnect with Grayson, as their friendship has been strained as of late. I want to continue on with my little recap of the book, but am struggling with where to draw the line. Just know that Nora returning home is where things start to pick up.

As I said above, this book is spectacular and it fully deserves the five stars that I gave it. Age gap isn't a typical read for me, and if I'm being honest it is a sub-genre that I struggle with it a bit. But that's on me. Putting that to the side, I loved this romance story. I love the history of friendship that Nora and Gray have. I love how he's been by her side for as long as she can remember. Gray has pretty much been a part of her family. Asher, oh what do I even say about him. Asher is a bit over the top, and in my mind he's taking his mission to protect his little sister a bit too far. I mean, I get it to a point, he has issues that need to be brought to light and resolved. Then when things happen at home, and Asher does what Asher does, I was gutted. My heart sank. The tears fell. But then, when the BIG thing happens towards the end? Holy crap. That was when I gasped. I found myself rereading that section because I couldn't believe it actually happened. Oofta.

My emotions went on a roller coaster ride once again. I loved Nora and Grayson's relationship. I loved the brotherly connection between Grayson and Asher. I loved the Nelson family. And now I find myself wanting Asher's story. K.L. Jessop if you could make that happen, I'd love it.

Friends, you need to go grab this book. Please just trust me.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,

Warrior {a review}

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but this week I have been reviewing books within the Salvation Society series. I have been loving every single minute of it.

Today I am bringing you my review of Warrior by A.M. Brooks. If friends to lovers is your go to trope, go grab this book. How about enemies to lovers? Second chance romance? Romantic suspense? Go grab Warrior! It has all of that!

Warrior begins by taking us back in time to when Colt was a child. We see his family, we meet one of his friends, and eventually we meet Lyric. Lyric just moved in across the street. Colt's world eventually gets just decimated. I can't think of another way to describe it. Two people that he loves have been taken away from him, and the third person has changed as well and not for the better. Lyric is there beside him through it all. That is until they go off to college. They had a plan. But plans change, hearts break, and relationships end. Flash forward 8 years, and they meet again.

I feel like I've said a bit too much in that little recap, but hopefully not.

There are no words that can fully explain my love of this book! I was all in, and felt all the emotions. Lyric and Colt are just meant to be together. From their relationship in high school, to planning for their future at college, it was them taking the next step toward forever. When Colt changed all that, my heart sank. I was heart broken for both of them. There is so much I want to say, but can't because I don't want to ruin the story!  The journey back to each other was rocky, but you could feel the love between them. Add in the suspense aspect, and egads. WHAT A RIDE!  Now for me, I do wish that part of the story had been a bit longer, a bit more played out, but still, I loved it.

If you're a romance reader and you have not read a book from the Salvation Society, I highly suggest you do. This 8th edition that has been releasing this week would be a fantastic place to start. Your emotions will go for quite a rollercoaster ride.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,

Shattered {a review}

Shattered by Bella Emy is the latest addition to the Salvation Society series. It just released today, and if friends to lovers is your favorite trope, then you're going to want to read Shattered. Or if second chance romance pulls at your heartstrings, then this book will have you covered.

Lexi and Kalen met in high school, and Kalen knew he wanted a relationship with Lexi almost immediately. Lexi on the other hand made him wait. As time goes on, their relationship builds, and they start dating. Kalen and Lexi grew up in different financial situations. Lexi's parents were well to do, and well Kalen just had his dad and they struggled. It didn't matter though because Kalen and Lexi loved each other. Or so Lexi believed. Instead her world was flipped upside down in an instant. Not only did her dad leave, but so did Kalen. Flash forward many years later, Lexi's broken heart still isn't fully mended, and it is at a wedding that she runs into Kalen.

If you know me, you know that I love a good second chance romance. Add in the friends to lovers trope and there is a solid chance I'll love the book. Such is the case with Shattered. I found myself upset when everything happened. I felt the nerves that Lexi was feeling at meeting up with Kalen at the wedding. I felt the breath that was released when things shifted back. Only then to have my heart crushed again when their point of struggle happened. Of course it all ends with an HEA, so all is good.

At times I felt that too much time was spent discussing the past, but I can see why Bella Emy had that in there. It was to give us understanding as to why certain things happened. I do wish we would have been privy to the conversation between Lexi's Mom and Kalen. I do wish we had Kalen's explanation as to why he did what he did. I also felt the reconnection was a bit rushed, and there wasn't enough tension/groveling/emotion in that part of the book. Yes, we knew that Lexi was angry, but where was the fight between the two?

Still though, Shattered grabbed my heart. Kalen and Lexi are amazing together. I need to go look at other books by Bella Emy, because based on Shattered, I'm sure I'll enjoy her other books.

Guardian {a review}

Friends! I'm not going to waste any time before I tell you that Guardian by Stacie Santoro was a FIVE STAR READ!

This is the second book from the Salvation Society that I have read, and I'm hooked. Give me all the books in this series. Seriously. Hand 'em over.

Guardian is a paranormal romance! It has been SO LONG since I've read a PNR, and I honestly forgot how much I tend to enjoy them. Aarabelle just accepted a job at Valor-Reed Security, and she has been teamed up with Lorcan. Lorcan is also new to Valor-Reed, but really he's undercover. Lorcan is a Warlock, and he's on a mission from the King to track down an item that is extremely important.

I FREAKING LOVED THIS BOOK! From the beginning I was all in. Witnessing the work relationship quickly blossom into a friendship, and then them being a couple, was everything. I loved the suspense. I loved the entire storyline. Guardian reminded me of a few Nora Roberts trilogies that I had loved. I want to talk about the scene toward the end of the book when Lorcan was off fighting, but spoilers. SO GOOD! I want more of these characters. I want more PNR featuring a human and a Warlock.

I feel like I haven't said enough about the book, but it's so hard because I don't want to ruin anything. Just know that this book gives you the romance and the suspense/action that is needed with a PNR.

If you are a fan of paranormal romances, work place romances, instalove, and/or the Salvation Society, then GO READ GUARDIAN!

Stacie Santoro lives with her family in New York, in the town where she was born and raised. She is the mom to three amazing boys and wife to a great man (who swept her off her feet with his basketball skills).

When she's not running with her family, you can find her enjoying a glass of wine or cup of tea, reading a book or daydreaming about a million things; like stories to write, putting her toes in the sand or owning every lip gloss created. Or maybe having one created just for her.

She's also smiling big from the release of her debut novel, The Real Devil; Journal One, and a firm believer that it's never too late to make your dreams come true.
