Anchored Hearts {a review}

When I read the teaser for Anchored Hearts, I was immediately drawn in. I love a good second chance romance, and I was looking forward to witnessing how Alejandro and Anamaría were going to reconnect. I was also curious about the moms and how they might do a little pushing. Oh and knowing this book is set in the Florida Keys, I automatically knew the setting was going to be AH-MAZING.

If you haven't read the teaser (it's posted down below), I'll fill you in a little bit. Alejandro is an extremely talented photographer who has traveled the world. On one of his most recent trips, he was going for a shot, and fell. When he fell he broke his leg. That led him home to his parents house, where he could be taken care of, and loved upon. Well who happens to be an EMT/Firefighter, and also his ex? Anamaría. So when Alejandro needs a check up, his mom calls her in. Does Anamaría want to do this? NO! She wants nothing to do with Alejandro. But she also can't say no to family, and Alejandro's family is like her own.

Here's the thing. This book was good, but it left me feeling a little underwhelmed. Anchored Hearts is billed as a romance, but while the romance is there, it's really more of a side story. To me, the real story is between Alejandro, his father, and expectations. That is where it felt like the book focused. Well that and Anamaría's business kicking off. The romance storyline was lacking in my mind. Now don't get me wrong, when things finally amped up, they went fast, but still it didn't feel right. Does that make sense? Yes, I liked the characters. Yes I loved the setting. Yes I loved the fact that this was a second chance romance with meddling mothers! (and oh how these mothers meddled!) Yes, I wish I could see the photos that Alejandro took while in Cuba! All that to say, the book fell a little flat for me. At times it just felt like there was too much filler, and there was a slow burn happening that didn't need to happen.

Have you read Anchored Hearts? What were your thoughts about the book? Did I just completely miss the mark and perhaps read too fast?

Thanks for reading,

Anchored Hearts by Priscilla Oliveras is now live!

Sparkling with humor, romance, Latinx culture, and the unique island energy of Key West, Florida, the acclaimed Keys to Love Series by USA Today bestselling author Priscilla Oliveras is the perfect summer read. Sparks fly for a second time when award-winning photographer and prodigal son Alejandro ends up back home, forced to face the familia--and the girl he left behind--for the first time in years. Can these two Key West natives learn to put away old hurts and embrace a new future under the tropical sun?

Award-winning photographer Alejandro Miranda hasn't been home to Key West in years--not since he left to explore broader horizons with his papi's warning "never to come back" echoing in his ears. He wouldn't be heading there now if it wasn't for an injury requiring months of recuperation. The drama of a prodigal son returning to his familia and their beloved Cuban restaurant is bad enough, but coming home to the island paradise also means coming face to face with the girl he left behind--the one who was supposed to be by his side all along . . .

Anamaría Navarro was shattered when Alejandro took off without her. Traveling the world was their plan, not just his. But after her father's heart attack, there was no way she could leave--not even for the man she loved. Now ensconced in the family trade as a firefighter and paramedic, with a side hustle as a personal trainer, Anamaría is dismayed that just the sight of Alejandro is enough to rekindle the flame she's worked years to put out. And as familia meddling pushes them together, the heat of their attraction only climbs higher. Can they learn to trust again, before the Key West sun sets on their chance at happiness?

“A big-hearted, beautiful book about first love, second chances, and finding one’s place in the world. An exceptional getaway of a book!"
Emily Henry, NY Times bestselling author, Beach Read

“Anchored Hearts has it all: undeniable chemistry between its irresistible leads; believable roadblocks to their happy ending; a heartwarming world filled with familia and comunidad; and a lush Key West setting that leaps off the page. Alejandro and Anamaría’s love story is not to be missed!”
