Missing Maverick by Anna Brooks {a review}

It's time! It's time for Missing Maverick by Anna Brooks! If you've been following me for a while now, you know that I have read the other two books in the Ryder Ranch series, and absolutely loved them.  You may also know that I have been WAITING for Maverick's story. He captured my attention back in Hoping for Hunter, and I just HAD TO KNOW everything.

In Missing Maverick, we have Maverick Ryder and Cricket McBride. These two were high school sweethearts, and Maverick was ready to propose. Then Cricket left to go to New York, and Maverick's heart was shattered. Fast forward 13 years, and Maverick is a dad of 2 girls, working with his family, and still grieving the relationship he lost. Then there's Cricket. She has been in New York, found a couple family members, buried a family member, got married, got divorced, and is returning home. She still loves Maverick, but she is positive that he will never forgive her. The day that Maverick walks into The Pig is the day that he and Cricket reunite. This does not go well, and has just brought back all the feelings from years ago. Now, can these two find a way back to each other? Or are they destined to stay apart? What about Cricket's ex-husband? Is he going to be an issue for them?

Missing Maverick did not disappoint. Yes there were a few things I would have preferred to be a bit different, but in the grand scheme of things, I am a happy camper. Maverick's backstory is interesting. Knowing how close he and Cricket were, to how he reacted after she left, to his daughters, to just who he became after Cricket left, and after his mom left. Those were two major events in his life. But Cricket has been through some stuff too. Yes she had her reason for leaving, but as we learn, she wasn't planning on staying away. Life just happened and delayed her return. Then there was her marriage, her divorce, and the whole situation she dealt with because of her ex. It was a lot. I suppose this is also where I should mention that there is a content warning regarding domestic violence. It is just mentioned, not re-enacted and there isn't graphic detail or anything like that. But if that is something you struggle to read about, know that it is part of Cricket's story. I love these characters. I love this setting. I want to visit there. I want to become friends with these fictional people. Just yes. There was a lot of drama in this book. There was a little suspense as well. And Mama Ryder makes an appearance after being gone for years. Let's just say I got choked up with that one. Oh the emotions. One more thing, Maverick was a bit of an ass in this book. Yes, I know, Cricket returning triggered emotions, but dang he was a grump.

Like I said, I loved this book. I love this series. It is of no surprise that I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I'm thinking it is Mack's story! But now I have to wait until July 2022. Excuse me while I go cry. (and pray that the release date is pushed up.)

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts on Missing Maverick. If you enjoy cowboy romances that are set in small towns then you need to read this entire series!

Laura

I was going to love her until my last breath, and she promised to do the same… but she lied.

Cricket McBride packed up without warning, ditching our small town and the life we were going to build together. She left me with tears in her eyes, a kiss on my cheek, and an empty heart that had done nothing but hardened over the years.

My life wasn’t what I thought it would be, but I’d long since accepted it for what it was. I was content with working on my family ranch and being the best father I could. And I was fine with that.

Or so I thought.

When Cricket returned, one look was all it took for me to admit I still cared, but it wasn’t until I saw the marks on her skin and the pain in her soul that I realized just how deep that love went. Because the same hands that held her tight also promised to protect her… and I never broke a promise.

Meet Anna Brooks

The first time Anna tried to read a romance novel, her hair caught on fire when she leaned over a candle to sneak a peek at her mom’s Harlequin. She thinks being hit on the head with a shirtless Fabio until the smoke cleared is what sparked the flame for her love of romance.

Anna was born in Wisconsin, but currently lives in Texas with her husband and two boys.

She writes sexy romance that always has a happy ending and loves bringing characters back for cameos. Less than six degrees of separation connects any of her novels.

When she’s not writing or reading, she’s watching reruns of her favorite romcoms, talking to her dog and cat like they’re human, eating carbs, or practicing hand lettering.

Wilder {a review}

*this book has now been renamed Wishing for Wilder*

Today is the day that the second book in the Ryder Ranch series is available! That's right folks, Wilder is having his story told. You're going to enjoy this one. Especially if second chance romance is one of your favorite tropes.

In Wilder, we reconnect with Wilder, and we meet Frankie. Wilder and Frankie are both 16, and they meet for the first time. The attraction is instant. Frankie is a young woman who thinks nobody pays attention to her, and all the guys are looking at her twin sister. After all she thinks Piper is gorgeous, whereas she is a nerd and nothing to pay attention to. Wilder thinks differently. They may have only met for a moment, but in that time, Frankie made an impression on Wilder. A couple days later, they meet up again this time at the Ryder Ranch. The two spend the majority of the time talking and getting to know each other. Before Frankie, and her family, leave the ranch they agree to meet up the next day at The Pig. Except Wilder never shows. Flash forward a year, and a lot has changed. Frankie and her family are back in town for their annual vacation, Piper is a new mom, and no one wants to take this trip. Zee, Frankie's dad, is working on a surprise for Frankie. And this surprise will allow her to see Wilder again. Zee manages to convince the Ryder's to take Frankie on a trail ride through the ranch. Her dad remembers how much she loved it last year, and he just wants his daughter to be happy again. Wilder takes her out, and after a lot of talking, suddenly Frankie is thrown from the horse. That fall had her breaking her arm. Once she is back home, Wilder shows up for a visit. Her address had been on the paperwork they filled out for the ranch, and he just couldn't stay away. Plus he was feeling guilty, as though the fall was his fault. Eventually he has to leave, even though he doesn't want too. Flash forward many years, and Wilder goes out of town with his brothers to celebrate Hunter's recent wedding. (an after the fact bachelor party) While at the hotel, a woman literally runs into him. Who is it? Frankie! And that begins their current day story where a lot happens. There are high moments, low moments, passionate moments, and painful moments.

I gave this book 4.5 stars on Goodreads. It was extremely close to 5 stars, but I just didn't feel it in my gut. But still, this book was marvelous. From the first moment Frankie and Wilder met, I was hooked on them, and I knew their story was going to be memorable. Then when they reconnected a year later, and then again in current day, it was just so dang good! These two had a connection that was powerful then and now. Seeing their passion, their pain, their heartache, and then witnessing the healing, and growth they experienced was wonderful. I was smiling like a fool through most of the book. My heart broke for them at the painful parts of the story, and then I was floating on cloud 9 during the good parts.  When the big dramatic moment happened (with Brenda, Dixie, and Frankie) I legit gasped, and my hand flew to my mouth. I could not believe what I had read, and my heart broke for Wilder and Maverick. But then there was everything that happened after that moment, and I fell even harder for these characters. I loved the story. I loved the characters (main and sides, and the setting was somewhere I would enjoy visiting. Love the small town settings! Oh, and there was a bombshell dropped toward the end, and I need to know more about that. Is it time for Maverick's book yet? Because I'm sure it will be talked about in there. Or at least it had better be!

GO READ THIS BOOK! If cowboy romances are your typical read, read Wilder. If small town romances are your favorite, then read Wilder. If second chance romances top your list, then trust me, read Wilder.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts,
Laura

I was too young to understand the beauty of what I held in my arms when she crashed into my world.

Frankie Young was never far from my mind, so when she came back into my life after nearly a decade, it was as if no time had passed.

After we reconnected in more ways than one, there was no denying what we had was extraordinary and, I thought, forever. But when she discovered something I’d been hiding, she gave up on us without giving me a chance to explain.

My lies broke her heart, but her walking away shattered what was left of mine. I thought that was the end for us… until Frankie and I found ourselves bound together for life. While we navigated our new found destiny, not only did we have to fight for each other, but we had to protect our future from someone who didn’t want us to have one together.

Hunter {a review}

*this book has now been renamed Hoping for Hunter*

Anna Brooks has just released Hunter, which is the first book in her new series Ryder Ranch. Hunter is our introduction to the family, and what an introduction it was.

Picture it, you're driving to a new place, you take a wrong turn, and suddenly there is a cow running towards you. Yes, you read that right, a cow. So you quickly get back in your car, and try to drive away. Only to then crash into a ditch. When you get back out of your car, you notice a cowboy riding up behind that cow, and you watch him rope her. Next thing you know, he is rescuing you. Well my friends, that is how Hunter starts off. Hunter helps Summer up onto his horse, takes her back to his place so they can call for a tow truck, and offers her a place to stay until her car is repaired. I should mention, Summer is broke, and while she's nervous about this, she takes Hunter up on his offer. And this is where their story begins.

When the teaser said that a cow was involved in the meet cute for our couple, I was hesitant. I couldn't picture how that was going to play out. But now having read the book, it was the perfect opening for the story. This was such a good story! I found myself laughing a bit here and there. I shed a few tears at parts. I could feel the anger, frustration, and heartache when the dramatic moment happened. Everything Hunter was feeling as he worked through it all, I felt it. Seriously. Then when Summer went to Lorna, I felt all those emotions too. Oh this book. Loved the romance. Loved the friendships that Summer was building. Loved the alpha-ness of Hunter. I was completely smitten with the setting. Then there was the Ryder family bond, that right there was spectacular. I even loved how Summer's secret was revealed, and when she explained everything that had happened in her life, my heart went out to her. Hunter and Summer are just amazing together.

Loved this first book in the series. What a start! Let's talk rating real quick. I am choosing to give Hunter 4.5 stars. I could not put the book down, and I was completely drawn into the world that Anna Brooks had created. I cannot wait to go back, and I am eagerly anticipating Wilder's story.

If you like insta-love, alpha males, cowboys, and/or small town romance, then please go read Hunter! I loved it, and I think you might too.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,
Laura

I never expected a runaway cow would have led me to the love of my life, but chasing after that heifer turned out to be the best decision I ever made.

Summer Paige was lost, alone, and a mess… just like her nearly totaled car. After a glass of whiskey and a promise to keep her
safe, I convinced her to stay while she got back on her feet.

It wasn’t long before the innocent beauty turned my life upside down, and I realized she was everything I didn’t know I wanted.

Life was perfect. Until the day I woke up and found her gone.

Her letter was supposed to explain why she left, but it did the opposite and made me want her even more. I had to prove that her past didn’t matter to me because all I wanted was her future. And I intended to do just that… as soon as I found her.
