Fool Me Twice {a review}

Fool Me Twice is the brand new release from Lizzie Morton, and reader friends, go grab this book now. Especially if you enjoy a good romantic suspense.

Britney currently works as a writer at a gossip magazine in New York. It's not her ideal job, but it pays the bills. One day at work, her boss calls her and a fellow coworker into her office to assign them a story. Michael Becket is rumored to have ended his relationship, and she wants all the info. If the rumors are not true, then she wants Britney and her coworker to make some gossip happen. This leads to Britney being on an airplane that is headed to Florida. Who does she sit next to? Michael Becket. Naturally. The two share a conversation, go through some turbulence on the plane, and there is definitely some chemistry between the two. Things happen, Becket finds out who Britney truly is, and he wants revenge for what happened. Flash forward a bit, and a plan is hatched. Britney will come back to Florida, and write a story on who the real Michael Becket is. But He's not going to make it easy on her. If anything he'll string her along. But while all that is happening, someone from Becket's past is coming back into his life. And this someone is not a good person. Becket is starting to wonder if he's truly seeing what he is, or if it's just a figment of his imagination. He knows he should mention something to Britney, but she's seeing things too, and she thinks it is someone from her past coming to get her. So who is this person? What is going to happen? And what's up with the cell phone that Michael has that only has a couple phone numbers stored in it?

As I started reading Fool Me Twice, I was expecting a sweet but steamy sports romance. And that is not what happened. Yes there was steam. But I wasn't expecting the suspense! I wasn't expecting the hate to love story that was unfolding. Add in the forced proximity, and I was hooked. Yes the story between Brit and Becket was interesting, but it was really the suspense part that had me unable to put the book down. Who was that person that both Becket and Britney kept seeing? What is the reason for them being there? Why do they keep hanging around? I needed the backstory on that. Of course Lizzie Morton did not disappoint, and she filled me in perfectly.  When the story wrapped up, I felt like I knew who Becket was, the relationship between him and Britney was good, and I was content. Sort of. Or at least until the epilogue when Josie was leaving work. I need Josie's book NOW. Seriously. Oh my word. I can only hope that things wrap up "nicely" in Josie's book.

I do have one question though, and that involves Britney's coworker and former boss. Whatever happened to them? Was there repercussions? Were they ever called out for their part in the initial story?

Highly recommend reading Fool Me Twice. I do suggest starting with the prequel, Fool Me Once, but that isn't 100% necessary. Go download this book. Read it. Come back and talk to me about it.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts,
Laura

Becket:

If you hated me and if you hated my story… good.

Becket is my mask.

One I’ve kept firmly in place and with good reason. Only one person saw a glimmer of the real me, and she reminded me why we build walls: to keep things out.

The night we met was a farce, a real-life version of The Hangover and all thanks to her. But now, I’m determined to bulldoze my way into her life like she did mine.

It’s time she learnt a lesson; you should never judge a book by its cover. And my story is more complicated than she could ever imagine.

Britney:
Our romance was a plane crash. A disaster. It ended as quickly as it began.

I thought I'd meet my dream guy one day. The one that would sweep me off my feet, whispering sweet nothings in my ear while I ran my hands over his beautiful, chiseled body.

Instead, Michael Becket, the biggest douchebag in the NFL, is the one who's firmly imprinted himself in my mind.

I'm learning not everyone we fall for is Prince Charming. People have flaws, people have secrets, and I shouted his out for the world to hear. And now ... he's determined to find out mine.

The Trouble with #9 {a review}

It is time for Maksim and Paisley to have their story told! That's right my reader friends, today is the day that The Trouble with #9 is available! So be sure to go check out this second book in the Hockey Hotties series by Piper Rayne.

Maksim and Paisley shared a moment together at that New Years Eve party, and ever since Paisley is all Maksim can really think about. He's intrigued by her. He wants to get to know her. To date her. To make her his. That is until he finds out that Paisley is the new therapist for the team. And he's required to meet with her. Maksim doesn't want to talk to a therapist, and he definitely doesn't want anyone to learn of his past. Meanwhile Paisley is excited about this new opportunity, and is looking forward to talking to each of the players. When she learns that she will have to talk with Maksim, she's a bit worried. Yes, she'll do her job and be professional, but she can't deny the attraction that is there. She just needs to convince Maksim to put it to rest until her job with the Fury is done. Should be simple, right?

I love hockey romances. I do. I've said it before, and I know I'll say it a lot more in the future. There is just something about it that draws me in, and captivates me. That is mostly true with The Trouble with #9. I loved how Maksim and Paisley met. I love the chemistry that they have. I enjoyed the dates they went on. But that is about where it stops. My heart goes out to Maksim and what he experienced all those years ago. That had to be a rough time for him, and he never healed from that. So I wasn't surprised that he didn't want to talk to a therapist, even though it was required by the owner. Paisley said she was going to keep things on the up and up. She was going to not jeopardize her career. Yet she went through with the dates, and the relationship, anyways. That is where things didn't mesh with me. It seemed as though it was instantaneous too. That just didn't sit right. Add in Maksim and him withholding a bit of information, and him not taking the therapy sessions seriously, and I was annoyed. I had such high hopes for The Trouble with #9, and while the story was decent, I felt a bit let down. It just wasn't what I wanted from the story or the characters. I chose to give the book 3.5 stars. I liked the concept. I liked the characters on their own. I liked the setting. It had potential.

If you like workplace romances, then give The Trouble with #9 a read. Just because it didn't live up to my expectations, doesn't mean that you'll feel the same. If you do read it, come back and let me know your thoughts. I'd love to talk with you about the book (and the series).

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts,
Laura

Trouble.

One word that comes to mind when someone talks about me. I like to think of it as protection, watching out for the ones I love. But now I’m spending more time in the penalty box than on the ice and the team owner isn’t happy.

Finding myself across the room from the hot therapist I kissed on New Year’s Eve only makes me push my problems down further. I want couch time with her but not the kind she’s used to.

I decide to lie to her just to finish off my therapy so I can do what I really want—date her—even if she says she doesn’t date hockey players. Just when my therapy sessions are up and I’ve made some headway with Paisley, it’s my parents who throw another wrench in my plans.

If I abide by my parent’s wishes to marry the one they’ve chosen, I’ll lose Paisley forever. But if I go against my parents, I’m failing my deceased best friend all over again.

Break it Down {a review}

Have you ever read a book where you cried through the majority of it? Because for me, that was Break It Down by April Canavan. If you're unfamiliar with the book, it is the fourth book in the Birch Police Department series. Honestly, I've read all four, and all four of them have had me in tears at one point or another. What can I say, except I'm a very emotional person.

In Break It Down, we have Chloe and Ian. They have been a couple for YEARS, and were engaged to be married. That is until Chloe receives news that her brother has died during his most recent overseas deployment. This gutted her, and she felt it was Ian's fault. She blamed him, and so she ended their relationship. But not a day goes by that she doesn't regret that decision. At the reading of her brother's will, it is announced that Chloe, Ian, and the rest of the group are all headed for a week long vacation. It is all paid for, and there are challenges to be completed while there. It is at this vacation where Chloe is finally able to talk to Ian a bit. She lays it all out there, and she makes it clear that she wants her ring back. She wants to marry Ian! Ian is making her wait. One day Chloe and Ian are out on the lake enjoying time together when they notice something strange. It looks like something is floating in the water, and when they get closer they find out it is a woman. They rescue her, and the ambulance arrives to take her to the hospital. And that's that. Or is it? This my friends is where the suspense kicks in a bit.

As I said at the beginning I cried throughout this story. When death is mentioned, or a major illness, I automatically get all up in my feelings. There is something about walking through this period with the characters that just brings out my sympathetic self, along with a bit of empathy. And then I'm just a mess. So learning that Chloe's brother died overseas, and also learning that her parents died years earlier, and she's now the only one left of her family, just hit me hard. Even typing that out made my eyes a little misty. Collect yourself Laura! Witnessing Chloe go through all this, and trying to distance herself from Ian was hard. I understand why she was doing what she was, but still. I loved every single thing about Break It Down. From the struggles that Chloe and Ian went through, to the vacation at the lake house. to the activities they had to participate in, to the return home, to the end of the book. All of it was amazing. My emotions went on a rollercoaster ride, but that's okay! It was worth it for this book. When the book was over half through, I was wondering when the suspense was going to kick in. I figured it would have started already. But clearly I was wrong. When it did begin though, I was a nervous wreck. I mean I knew the story would end on a good note, but getting there took time. I can't lie, I do wish the suspense had been a bit more drawn out, but it is what it is, and I loved the story.

Originally I was going to give Break It Down 4.5 stars, but as I've sat with it, I realized that it truly is a 5 star read. Yes I wanted there to be more to the suspense side of the story, but ultimately it isn't enough to not call it a 5 star read.

I loved this book. I love all these characters. The setting is fantastic. And I clearly need to purchase some stock in Kleenex since I've been going through so much lately with all these tear jerker stories. Highly recommend that you read Break It Down, and really all the books in the Birch Police Department series.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts,
Laura

Chloe
A folded up flag is all that remains.
My brother lost overseas.
And every single day, I face the man who walked away.
The man who couldn't save him.
The one I blame, even if he's not at fault.
He haunts every step I take, and I can't escape.
I'm not sure I can convince him to let me go.
I'm definitely not strong enough to admit the truth.
I never stopped loving him.

Ian
The sight of her holding that flag will haunt me until the day I die.
One night.
One mistake.
One failed mission.
Two families ruined forever.
The right thing to do is walk away.
Especially when I see rage in her eyes.
She doesn’t need the trouble I’ll bring her way.
There’s only one thing I’m good for.
And it sure as hell doesn’t include fixing her problems.
With my expertise, I can break her down and tear her apart.
I just can’t put her back together again.
But she’s in my blood, and I can’t let her go.
She might be shattered and broken, but I never wanted her perfect.
I just want her.

Meet April Canavan

I live on chaos and coffee, and you’ll find it running through every single one of my stories.

First of all, I absolutely abhor writing anything biographical. In any form. I’m terrible at it, and I have the very firm belief that no one wants to know who I am. You’re here for books, right? But that doesn’t mean I’m off the hook.

I grew up sneaking over to my great grandmother’s to read her Harlequin novels. Those were delivered once a month in a ginormous box, and from the age of ten, she let me devour them in their entirety. I fell in love with romance, even the clean kind. And that, undoubtedly, led to many days and nights with my face buried in a book and the discovery that I wasn’t happy unless my hair was up, and I had a story in my hand.

I never wanted to write. I wanted to read. ALL the words. Until someone pointed out to me that I’d been writing my entire life. I just needed to put the book in my hand down and pick up a pen.

Once I started, I found out that I couldn’t stop. Now, I’m always writing. Or reading. Or chasing my son through the house to get the elusive hug he thinks I don’t need.

Oh, and I’m a Leo… which is completely on-point if you know me at all. I love being the center of attention. On my terms. When I can stay at home in my pajamas. With lots and lots of coffee on hand. And maybe a few snacks.

Sacrifice {a review}

SACRIFICE is the second book in the Savage Falls Sinners MC series by Caitlyn Dare and is a continuation from the ending of Savage.

Typically this is where I would recap the book, but I can't do it. The chance of spoilers is just too great. What I can tell you is that things are heating up. The threat to Sadie and the club is increasing. Now the Sinners need to do what they can to take care of Sadie, and the club. They need to protect what is theirs.

If you read my review of Savage, then you'll know that this series was my introduction to the reverse harem trope, and I am liking it. RH isn't my absolute favorite, but it's not horrible either. I have yet to decide if I'll read another, I guess it will all depend on the story. Back to Sacrifice...The suspense definitely kicked in during this book, and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what was going to happen next. What really grabbed my attention though was Dane's storyline. That intrigued me, and I began speculating what would happen. I will say that what I assumed, was correct. So yay me! I'm curious what is going to happen next. How is this story going to wrap up? Will Sadie eventually make a choice between the guys, or is she going to keep the reverse harem thing going? Oh, and if you're looking for a steamy story, the Savage Falls Sinners definitely fits the bill. Oh the steam.

If you are a fan of MC romances, or RH romances, then give this series a try. If you have a Kindle Unlimited (KU) subscription, you can read it for free. Should you decide to read The Savage Falls Sinners series, come back and let me know what you think! I'd love to discuss it with you.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,
Laura

Rhett Savage, Dane Stray, and Wesley Noble.
I shouldn’t want them.
But I do—𝘒𝘭𝘭 of them.
They each give me something I need.
Challenge.
Love.
Comfort.
And every second we’re together, I find myself falling deeper…hoping that they can put aside their differences and find a way to make this work. I need them now more than ever.

Because somebody wants to hurt me.
The club.
And I can’t help but think that there’s more to the threat than we know.
That maybe I’m not the only target.
But no matter what happens, I’m Sadie Ray Dalton, the Sinners club princess…And I’m determined to get what I want.
