His Secret Love {a review}

His Secret Love is the final installment of the Manhattan Billionaires series by Ava Ryan. If you're looking for billionaire romance, single dad romance, and/or forbidden/workplace romance, then give His Secret Love a read.

Jake is a single parent to two adorable kids, and he shares custody of them with his ex-wife. Jake has little to no interest in a relationship, but he is always looking for one night with a willing partner. Enter the dating app he uses. After scrolling through he is captivated by this gorgeous red head with amazing green eyes. He can't get her off his mind, and he contacts her to set up a date. The date is planned, and they meet up at a local bookstore. Skye recently left law school, and is trying to find a job to pay the bills especially since her student loans are going to need to be paid. She checks out Jake on the dating app, and after a conversation she agrees to meet up with him at her family's bookstore. When the two meet, the attraction is instantaneous. After conversation, they agree to go grab dinner together. After dinner at Jake's condo, steamy moments happen out on the balcony, and Jake tells Skye that he will call her. He doesn't call her. A little while later, Skye lands the job of a life time. She is now a live in nanny, taking care of two adorable kids. The woman who hired her is even giving her free room and board! So now she can focus on paying down those loans and saving for an apartment. That is until she meets her employer's ex-husband. Now she's questioning everything. Because that ex-husband, aka also her new sort of boss, is Jake; the man she had a one night stand with. The man who never called her after he said she would. Now she is going to be living with him whenever he has the kids. Can they keep that one night in the past, or will lingering attraction cause issues?

His Secret Love was so good. This quick read held my attention, and I had to keep reading to see what would happen between Jake and Skye. Would Marlene find out? If so, what kind of drama would she bring? From the initial meeting at the bookstore, to the steamy night together, to the sudden forced proximity, it was all so good. Now I could have done without the secrecy, but honestly 1) it's right there in the title, and 2) it's what makes the story the story. Ya know? Loved it all. Loved that the kids were paying enough attention that they caught on. Love that Skye found a family to love her and accept her. Loved that these two got their HEA. I was worried for a bit, but it happened.

So if forced proximity, secret relationships, one night stands turned lovers is your thing, then read the book. Or if you like billionaire romances, read His Secret Love.

Thanks for reading my thoughts,
Laura

The Love Chirp {cover reveal}

Crystal Perkins has revealed the cover for The Love Chirp!

Releasing August 3, 2021

Neal "Rock" Roquemore earned his bad boy image with fights on the ice, and indifference to relationships off of it. When he's traded to the new hockey team in Seattle, he's not happy to be back in his hometown. He's even less happy when a recording of him criticizing elements of the new practice facility goes viral. Especially when he finds out the architect is the only woman he's ever loved...and walked away from.

Sarai Redlin watched the love of her teenage life walk away from her ten years ago, and she's never forgotten the pain he caused her. Now, when she's finally achieving her professional dream, Neal's back and ruining everything for her again. This time, she's older and wiser, and she's not going to fall for him again...and there's no way she's going to undo all her hard work just because he doesn't like it.

With the media and fans rallying against Sarai, Rock has no choice but to work out a compromise with her for the building design and amenities. A week on the island they both love might change everything for them again, but reality will eventually hit them hard once they're back in Seattle. Can their love survive this time, or will they have to learn to live apart once and for all?

Lachlan in a Kilt {a review}

Lachlan in a Kilt is the brand new book from Anna Durand, and it is the kick off to her brand new Ballachulish Trilogy! And let me tell you, this book is full of romance, steam, groveling, and you get a HEA at the end.

When the story begins, we find Lachlan attending a club that is meant as a place for casual hookups. I know. Not exactly the setting you'd think we'd be in, but go with it. All Lachlan can think about though is Erica, his new temporary neighbor. So imagine his surprise when he sees her sitting at the bar. Erica immediately assumes Lachlan is someone else (the man she was supposed to be meeting). That being said, she is drawn to him, and he captivates her. The next day, Lachlan and Erica officially meet, and Erica assumes that Lachlan is stalking her. She doesn't realize that he is her new, temporary, neighbor. Lachlan is in America for only a month while his friend is back in Scotland staying at his house on vacation. Lachlan is attracted to Erica, and he cannot get her off his mind. So he convinces her to have a month long relationship. The only rule is that they can share no personal information. Seems simple right? Well this proves to be anything but.

Lachlan in a Kilt was a pretty decent story. I will say that it seemed a bit heavier on the steamy scenes than the story, but hey every once in a while those types of books can be appreciated. Now that's not to say that there wasn't a story going on, because there was. Erica clearly had things she was going through with Presley (her ex), and Lachlan was dealing with a divorce that kept stalling. Both of them needed to get through that, but it was proving that they both needed some assistance. I loved the bits of Gaelic that were thrown in throughout the story. I loved how Rory was helping Lachlan not only with his divorce, but with Erica's issues, and eventually on winning Erica back. The point of conflict was good, and I'm glad that it wasn't handled quickly. Sometimes it seems that the hero or heroine forgive too quickly, and things are just glossed over. That wasn't the case in this book. So I appreciated that. The reunion was wonderful and brought us back full circle. And can I just say, I loved Erica's dog. I have a thing for Goldens and oh this pooch! Such a good boy. After finishing Lachlan in a Kilt, I am now eagerly anticipating Aiden's story. Is it July 27 yet? I can't wait to see all that he goes through on his journey towards an HEA.

If you enjoy steamier books, ones that feature love at first sight, and/or a rich hero, then go grab this book. I've also learned that while this story is told from Lachlan's viewpoint, Erica tells her side of the story in Dangerous in a Kilt!  So I'm going to need to check that out to see what that's all about.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,
Laura

Lachlan MacTaggart is hot, Scottish, and dangerous  to a woman's heart.

I'm done with love. My ex-wife made sure of that. When my American friend offers to swap houses with me for a month, I can't say no. Chicago sounds like the perfect place for a holiday, until I find out there's a sexy American lass living next door.

Erica Teague is bonnie, clever, and as wounded as I am. But I won't ask her why. All I need is Erica in my bed for four weeks, no strings, just a summer fling. We won't talk about our pasts, our lives, or anything except sex.

That's the plan. But the woman who's too young for me is determined to crawl under my skin and expose everything.

Lachlan in a Kilt is the first book in The Ballachulish Trilogy, a brand-new series based on the first three books in the bestselling Hot Scots series, reborn and retold from the heroes' perspectives. Lachlan in a Kilt is coming soon in audio and will be narrated by John Hartley.

Something About You {a review}

Something About You by J. Nathan is now available! This new adult romance features two college students who could not be more opposite. It also involves a little blackmailing between our hero and heroine. So be prepared for that!

Something About You takes place at Cranmore University in Colorado. It is there that we first meet our characters. It is the start of a new school year, and Shay is getting settled into the dorms. The very first night there, she is greeted by the neighbor playing their music extremely loud. So she goes over and asks them to turn it down. That doesn't happen. But it is at this moment when she meets Kason for the first time. That introduction goes about as well as you can imagine. Needless to say the music becomes even louder. Fast forward a bit, and it turns out Kason is in the same physics class as Shay. She avoids him like the plague. A bit later, Shay attends a party with her roommate. Well it turns out that party is at Kason's. Shay drinks more than she should, and ends up crashing at the house. In a bed. With Kason. She's mortified. Kason leads her to believe that something happened between them, and he has it on video. Kason tells her he'll delete the video IF she tutors him in physics. And that is where this opposites attract romance begins.

Now it's been forever and a day since I've been in college, but life in the dorms doesn't really change much. So reading that Shay's experience with her neighbor had me chuckling a little bit. I found myself really enjoying the relationship between Kason and Shay. From the first impression, to the avoidance, to the blackmailing, to the hate, to the shift in their relationship, to what it ultimately becomes. I also found myself rooting for their relationship to work out. I mean a geek and a snowboarder? That deserves cheering on! Especially with all that Shay has been through in her life. She hasn't had it easy at all, so for someone to come along and sweep her off her feet? Yes. Just yes. Granted it isn't all a walk in the park. Oh no. These two have their moments where things are not all hunky dory, and you start to wonder if they'll get their HEA. All that Shay and Kason went through though was worth it for their relationship to become what it does. I was all in on this book, and could not put it down. Also, I am seriously hoping that J. Nathan writes another book featuring Kason's sister. I need that book!

If new adult romances featuring an athlete, a geek, the opposites attract trope, and/or the hate to love trope are things you enjoy, then go pick up Something About You!

Thank you for reading my thoughts,
Laura

Something About You by J. Nathan is now live!

Kason
I'm what you call a god, a superstar, a winner.

Being a professional snowboarder is my purpose in life.

I know exactly how to get what I want and I'm good at most everything I do.

I'm only at Cranmore University to appease my parents.

But, if I want to graduate, I need to pass physics.

And, since failing is not an option, blackmailing a nerd who hates me is my last resort.

Shay
I'm what some call a geek, a nerd, a loser.

And I don't care.

I know who I am.

I know where I come from.

And, I know exactly where I'm going.

That's why I'm at Cranmore University.

To get my degree and begin my life.

Only, that plan gets quickly derailed thanks to an unbecoming video, a blackmailing snowboarder, and his ex who's hell bent on making my life miserable.

They say everyone comes into your life for a reason.

What happens when that person is the opposite of what you want...

But exactly what you need?

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

So when she tells me she's sworn off men for the next year after a bad breakup, I jump at the chance to have some company on the vacation I'd booked for me and my cheating ex. But Mack's all grown up and we're both on the rebound.

In a romantic suite with just one bed, the weather isn't the only thing that gets hot.

He doesn't need her perpetually sunny outlook on life.

Is finding a head teacher position or love with a loyal man really that hard?

When she finds herself face-to-face with the one man who rubs her the wrong way on the reality dating show Blindly Ever After, she panics.

Smoke {a review}

Smoke is the fourth book in the Virtues and Lies series by Alexandra Silva. It is also the first part of Freddie and Georgina's story. You'll have to stay tuned for Flame which is the conclusion of their story, and it releases later this month.

From the few, spoiler free, comments that I've read on Goodreads, it does sound like you should read Virtue and Lies IN ORDER. However, I didn't do that. I KNOW, I KNOW! I'm jumping into the series by reading Smoke first, but I am going to go back and read from the beginning.  I am.  I just promised to have this review out by today, and my schedule didn't allow me to read the first three books prior. So don't do what I did. I don't know if I will write individual reviews for Burn, Scorch, and Blaze here on my blog, or if they will just be on Goodreads. But I should have that figured out soon.

Let me just say, this is a DARK romance with mafia vibes. But it isn't a mafia romance book. Does that make sense?

ANYWAYS...In this book we have Freddie who has been searching high and low for Lucy. While he never specifically says it, she is the woman he loves, and he feels guilty that she is missing. Had he just been on time, maybe she wouldn't have been taken. Fast forward 8 years. Freddie is in a relationship with Georgina. She loves him, but he will never say it back. That's beside the point. One day, out of the blue, Lucy shows up at Freddie's house. She is looking rough, and he takes her to the hospital. Now it's time to try and get some answers as to where she's been, and who took her. Lucy is being tight lipped about it all. Then there is Georgina, the extremely talented ballerina who is hopelessly in love with Freddie. Georgina is also accustomed the world that Freddie is a part of. So she doesn't question things. When a bouquet of flowers is delivered to Georgina, Freddie and company go on high alert. This bouquet has a specific meaning, and someone is coming for her.

As I said above, I stepped into the series not having read the previous three. Honestly I think that's why I struggled a bit while reading. I didn't have the full picture. I didn't know the background of the characters or the group they are up against. So that definitely did not play into my favor. I also think I struggled because I just wasn't in the mood for a dark romance. Yet I did not let those things sway my rating. I still feel that Smoke deserves 4 stars. Now that rating may change once I go back and read Burn, Scorch, and Blaze. Time will tell.

As I read Smoke, my curiosity was definitely piqued. The fact that there is this element of mystery (where was Lucy, who is coming after Georgina) definitely had me wanting to read more. I'm also really curious about the relationship between Freddie and Georgina. Then the fact that the book ends in a cliffhanger? Well geez Louise, just hook me in why don't ya. I need to know what happens next! Thankfully Flame is coming in a couple weeks so I can find out. I'm seriously hoping that Georgina and Freddie get their HEA. Also, what is going to happen with Lucy? Will the villain be defeated or will they escape? I NEED TO KNOW!

It is my goal to have Burn, Scorch, and Blaze read before Flame comes out. Wish me luck on that. I am hoping there might be a little leeway in my schedule to allow three additional books to be read.

If dark British romances are your thing, then definitely go check out the Virtues and Lies series by Alexandra Silva. Just be sure to start from the beginning. You know, that thing I didn't do.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,
Laura

Dirt Queen {a review}

Happy Book Release Day to Nora Blake!

Dirt Queen is Nora Blake's debut novel, and she has kicked off with an amazing story.

Dirt Queen is based on a true story, and it is a friends to lovers story.

Aaron and Sarah were childhood friends, and when they became teenagers they both realized they were attracted to the other. But those words were never spoken. About that same time, Sarah moved away. They tried to keep in touch, but life happens, and they became more like acquaintances than friends. As time went on, Aaron and Melany were married, and had two little boys. That marriage ended. Shortly before the divorce was finalized, Sarah returned to town. The sparks were immediate. The attraction was still there, and a relationship started. That is where the story begins, and my little recap ends.

This book was absolutely amazing. I laughed. I awww'd. I laughed some more. I cringed. I gasped. I ugly cried. My emotions were all over the place, and even though I was a wreck, I loved it. Even how it ended. Aaron and Sarah's relationship was fast, but when you have that history with the other person it just works. It's as though they were meant to be. Plus they had the mutual love of racing and working on the race cars. Watching their new relationship blossom was spectacular. Watching Aaron call out Sarah when she was trying to hold back was so good. He wasn't letting a communication issue happen in their relationship. Even the relationship that Sarah had with Aaron's boys was special. Then there was Nick. What a fun person. Perfect for the comedic relief.

There is so much I want to say about Dirt Queen, but I also don't want to spoil this amazing story. Just know that you will laugh, you will fall for the characters, you'll be frustrated with the custody situation, you'll also be devastated, and you'll feel the love between Sarah and Aaron. I gave Dirt Queen 5 stars, and I am going to be talking about this book for quite some time. As of now, it is definitely on my top 5 for  May.

Should you choose to read the book, have the tissues handy.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,

Dirt Queen by Nora Blake is now live!

I love you. Always.

Sarah--We hadn't spoken in years, and more often than not, he was on my mind. When I moved back to town he reached out. I stalked him enough times on Facebook to know he had a wife and two kids. I didn't want to get my hopes up, but the pull I felt inside couldn't be ignored.

Aaron--She was back. I thought I'd never see her again, but there she was. Within my reach. She agreed to meet up at the dirt track when I sent her a message. What would she think of me being a dad? Did she even know?

The unspoken feelings she tried to leave in the past forced her to keep him at arm's length. He was in the middle of a divorce and had two boys they both needed to consider. He was all in but she was questioning everything.

But sometimes...you have to follow your heart and let yourself fall--no matter how things might end. It'd be worth it. Always.

This book is based on a true story.
