Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros {a review}

Rebecca Yarros just released her first fantasy novel, Fourth Wing, and it is absolutely spectacular! I love the fact that she stepped out of her comfort zone, and dipped her toes into the fantasy realm. After reading Fourth Wing, I truly hope that Rebecca continues on in this genre.

What is Fourth Wing about? Let's start by taking a look at the description of the book:

Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general―also known as her tough-as-talons mother―has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter―like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda―because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Fourth Wing consists of 4 quadrants: Riders, Healers, Infantry, and Scribes. There is a certain group of people that has to join the Riders quadrant, they do not get another option. Whereas everyone else can choose what area would be the best fit for them.  (Well, besides Violet, that choice was taken from her.)

From the very first chapter I was pulled into this world. Basgiath intrigued me. The people intrigued me. I was immediately curious, and I fell into the book. Violet is a very likable character, as is Mira. Commanding General Sorrengail on the other hand is clearly a bit of an antagonist. It wasn't long into the story that we began to learn about Violet, her love of history, her love of books, and the fact that her body is built a bit different. Her joints are a bit looser, and she doesn't have a lot of strength. However she is quite mighty. The first task is to cross the parapet. Once on the other side she'll have a familiar face waiting for her in Dain. He's her childhood best friend. Violet will also meet the person her sister says to stay away from: Xaden Riorson. Prepare yourself to choose, as it is very much a Gale vs Peeta, or Jacob vs Edward, or Tamlin vs Rhysand situation.

There is so much action and suspense in this book. I loved it so. There was also a romance storyline building, and as a romance reader I loved it. If you're looking for a mystery, this also falls into that setting a bit, as there are definitely secrets being kept, and we need to sort those out.

Witnessing all of these first years go through the process, and having their dragons select them, was fascinating. That had me captivated. I was wondering what dragon would choose which rider, and of course paying closer attention to my favorite characters. It was also during this dragon selection, or rather rider selection, scene that some very memorable action moments popped up. I was holding my breath during that one.

The connection between Xaden and Violet continued to grow. The tension between Dain and Violet continued with intensity. Not to mention the attempts made to harm Violet by others. It was wild. Back to the dragon/rider selection scene for a moment. I loved how that all transpired. I loved how Violet was chosen. How that was shocking. It was just everything I could have wanted. Okay back to relationships and such. The friendship that Violet had with Rhiannon was something heartwarming. These two bonded immediately back at the parapet. So to see them still side by side, surviving, thriving, and preparing for the future was reassuring. There were so many young people that attempted to get to where these two are, but they are just now names on a scroll.

Now listen, a lot happened between rider selection and the war games. But I can't tell you everything because that would be rude. It would ruin the story, and I'm not about that life.

Let's talk a little bit about the war games scenes. OH MY WORD, the action, the suspense, the heartache. It was so much, and I was on the edge of my seat throughout. My jaw dropped so many times it was ridiculous. It's all because of how enthralled I was with the story, and the characters. Rebecca Yarros created this world that I just want to know more about. There are secrets being kept, and we are slowly learning a couple of them. I want to know the rest. Plus that ending? WHAT WAS THAT?!? AHHHHH! Is it November 7 yet? I need Iron Flame IMMEDIATELY!

If you've watched any of the review on TikTok for this book, you'll hear varied responses. Many will comment on the writing, and how it isn't necessarily their cup of tea. That's their opinion. They may be right, they may be wrong. What I know is that there was something magical about this book. Rebecca immediately pulled me into this new world. I fell for the characters. I despised the antagonists. The dragons stole my heart (Andarna!). The action was superb. The drama was intense. Everything was just so good. Even that bit of spice we had with Xaden and Violet was explosive. From the moment I picked this book up, until the very last page, I could not get enough. Here I am, a week later, and I am still thinking about Fourth Wing. This very well maybe my favorite of the month, as well as of the year. Time will tell.

If you are someone who doesn't typically read fantasy, like me, give this one a try. If you've read Rebecca's romance novels you know her style, and this is just taking us out of contemporary, and adding a few more magical elements to it all. The action, suspense, drama is delightful.

If you do typically read fantasy, and have been on the edge about Fourth Wing, pick it up. Seriously. Give it a read. Form your own opinions. Trust your gut, and enjoy the ride. I hope you love Fourth Wing as much as I did.

Who has recommendations for me? Anyone? I crave something similar to Fourth Wing. The dragons, the setting, the characters, the gryphons, all of it. I need something that will pull me in as much as Fourth Wing did. If it has a romance story to it as well, then that's even better.

Thanks for reading,
Laura

10 of My Favorite Brother's Best Friend Romances

It should come as no surprise that I ADORE the Brother's Best Friend (and/or sister's best friend) trope. I've spoken about that
before. Maybe it goes back to the fact that I grew up with two older brothers, and had a crush on a few of their friends way back then. That could play a small part in it. Maybe. No matter what though I'm obsessed and I find myself gravitating toward those stories. I think another part of it is similar to the friends to lovers trope. It's this person that you know, that you see on the regular, and an attraction just builds, or has the potential to build.

As brother's best friend is one of my top three favorite tropes I figured I'd share a few recommendations. Those that I selected are 10 of my favorite books that feature this trope. Of course there are other tropes that these books fall into as well, but I selected them for the brother's best friend trope. (psst: one is actually a sister's best friend book.) Be proud of me, I only shared 3 hockey romances. In all reality I could have probably had an entire post dedicated to hockey.

Have you read any of these titles? Do you have any recommendations for the brother's best friend trope? Fill me in on your favorites!

Happy Reading,
Laura

A Little Too Close by Rebecca Yarros {a review}

I was a compass, and she was north. I was powerless to fight whatever this was between us.

Did you know that Rebecca Yarros wrote a new trilogy with 2 other authors? It's true! Madigan Mountain is the series. Devney Perry and Sarina Bowen have also written books in this setting, with each author taking one of the Madigan brothers as their main character. Rebecca Yarros wrote the story of Weston Madigan.

Weston Madigan left this small ski town years ago. He was grieving, he was angry, and he needed out. The military offered him just that. An escape, a job, and the ability to learn to fly. Right before Weston left town though, he hired a photographer for Madigan Mountain. She was younger, pregnant, and in need of this opportunity. He never thought he'd see her again. Especially since he had no plans on returning home. All that changed with a single phone call from Reed.

Can the anger, the hurt, the heartache be pushed aside? Can Weston return home and move forward with his life?

My rating for A Little Too Close:

I could not put this book down. Weston drew me in with his closed off ways and family drama. It was more than that though. I could see the man he truly was underneath that rough exterior, and just knew that this man was hurting from childhood trauma.

While his return to Madigan Mountain wasn't something he truly wanted, it all worked out in the end. He was able to still pursue his passions, have his support system close by, and finally let those brick walls begin to crack.

That meet cute with Callie? LOVED IT. I wasn't certain how Rebecca Yarros was going to write it, but this was perfection.

Speaking of Callie, she impressed me. Once her story was fully revealed, my heart just went out to her. This woman has been through the ringer, and has finally found the people who can be her support system. They can walk through the highs and lows with her. Then there is that wonderful child of hers, and it just goes to show what a phenomenal mom she is. She tries her best, and always wants to put Sutton first. Even if that means her dreams get put on hold.

Watching that attraction build, and wondering"will they or won't they" just made the book all that more difficult to put down. Then of course Sutton comes in, and drops that little tidbit to them both. That had me chuckling.

The relationship Weston had with his big brother, and his dad, though? UH. My heart. Those scenes hit a little hard. The anger and heartache just poured off those pages during those scenes. When Callie said what she did to Weston, and it changed his perspective a bit, that too was eye opening. Still an emotional scene and storyline, but that new perspective helped.

The conflict...I couldn't pinpoint what it was going to be until it actually happened. At that point my heart hurt for the characters, and I could not wait to see how this was all going to be resolved. I was also a bit worried because I'm still not over what happened in The Last Letter, and I was honestly a bit nervous that would happen here. If you know, you know.

I absolutely loved A Little Too Close, and really need to read the other two in the series. Thankfully they are both waiting for me on my kindle. Or rather A Little Too Late is on my kindle, and A Little Too Wild will be there this weekend.

Curious about the tropes in A Little Too Close? You'll get Forced Proximity, Former Military, Sports Romance, Single Mom, and Small Town Romance. So many good ones.

If you are a fan of Rebecca Yarros, Sarina Bowen, and/or Devney Perry, then you need to check out this trilogy. It will be worth it, I promise.

Happy Reading,
Laura

Reason to Believe by Rebecca Yarros {a review}

Are you ready to visit the small town of Legacy? Well prepare yourself for Reason to Believe by Rebecca Yarros. In this small town romance you'll find the brother's best friend trope, a bit of forced proximity, some found family, and a whole lot of emotions going around. Oh if you happen to enjoy firefighters....well then you'll definitely want to pick this one up.

Now if you've read other books by Rebecca Yarros you might be thinking "Laura, I've been to Legacy before, so this isn't anything new". You'd be correct there are NOVELLAS out there that are set in Legacy. Reason to Believe is the first FULL LENGTH novel set in that small town. Those two novellas are called Point of Origin and Ignite. Do you need to read them first to enjoy Reason to Believe? Absolutely not. Will they enhance your experience? Maybe. If anything you'll get to know the characters who have already found their happily ever after. There are also a couple of short stories that you can access through Rebecca's newsletter. So be sure to sign up for that!

Is it any surprise that I adored this book? Is it any surprise that I found myself tearing up a few times while reading? The answer to both of those is no it isn't surprising. First of all Reason to Believe features one of my favorite tropes. This trope is almost a guarantee that I am going to fall head over heels. The other part that had me falling hard was that I could relate to Harper a bit. I have older brothers, and while I don't know if they ever said anything to their buddies about me being hands off, it kind of felt that way at times. This young woman loves with everything she has, and she longs to take care of those she holds in her heart. So whether that was the boys that she welcomed into her life, her brother, all of the Legacy fire crew, or just her friends. She loved them with everything she had.

This small town romance was absolutely fantastic. Harper and Knox had undeniable chemistry, and you could feel all the emotions. Not to mention you could see how much they loved those two little boys, and would do anything and everything for them. Watching Harper and Knox come together to make the life changing decisions that they did, drew me in. Harper knew that Knox would say yes to whatever she wanted without thinking about how it would affect his life. So she purposefully worded things the way that she did, so that he would make his own decision.

I found my heart breaking a few times during the story. Obviously with the devastating event that happened in Legacy, that kind of set the stage to begin with. Then you add in those two little boys who just had their lives flipped upside down. It was just a lot. Of course the "relationship" between Knox and Harper also added to the emotional parts.

Let's talk about Ryker for a moment. Ryker drove me bonkers with his big brother act, and trying to keep these two apart. I get it. I do. Knox is his best friend. He knows Knox better than anyone else. Except for the fact that Ryker's determination to keep Harper and Knox apart has been going on for way too many years now. Ryker got in the way of happiness. Not just for Knox, but also for his little sister. Therefore that just ticked me off!

I'm don't really want to touch on the foster care slash emergency placement part of the storyline. Except to say those boys were loved dearly, and in the end their happiness was worth it all. Also, I was on pins and needles the entire time. I can't lie about that. My mama heart was nervous.

With the history of the Legacy Hot Shot crew, and everything that played out there. That was just emotions piled upon more emotions. Witnessing the family members step up to get this going again was amazing. Seeing the passion and the determination to get this all going again, was fantastic. It wasn't easy by any means, but they came together when the local government was setting them up for failure. The next hurdle was getting reinstated as a Hot Shot crew.

That big dramatic moment between Harper and Knox just pulled the rug out from under my feet. My jaw hit the ground. I felt the pain radiating off of Harper. I felt the heartbreak that Knox was dealing with. Everything that happened in that situation was emotion driven. It was two people who were trying a way to survive the devastation that they just endured. Rather than gravitating toward each other, division occurred instead. They both ran the opposite direction. That broke my heart through and through. All that though got us to the reconciliation, and that was beautiful.

I could not put this book down, and I cannot wait to see who will be the next main character. I just know it's going to be amazing. These characters, and their small town, have grabbed my attention, and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Kudos Rebecca Yarros on a fabulous book.

Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts on Reasons to Believe. This was a definite 5 star read for me. I was fully invested in the storyline, and the lives of our characters. Go pick up this book. It's simply amazing.

Happy Reading,
Laura

“I’ll take them!”

That’s what I tell the social worker when my pre-k student and his baby brother need an emergency foster placement. I’ll do anything to keep the brothers from being split up. But my apartment’s flooded and there’s only one house I can take them to on such short notice…his.

Knox Daniels, my older brother’s best friend, offers his new place without hesitation. He’s not moving back to our tiny town until next month—that’s when all our hotshot firefighters are returning for their one and only chance to rebuild our fathers’ fallen, iconic crew.

It doesn’t matter that I’ve been silently in love with Knox since we were kids. It can’t matter that we pretend that reckless prom night kiss never happened. It won’t matter that my feelings for him could destroy his lifelong friendship with my brother and threaten the certification of their hotshot crew. Because I’ll be out of his house long before he gets back.

Except Knox just walked in…a month early. And the icing on this awkward cake? He’s gorgeous as always and I’m covered in baby puke. He takes one look at the boys and tells me we can make this work—

We can temporarily fake a relationship to keep them from being separated by the system.

Suddenly, everything matters.
