Capturing the Captain {a review}

All's fair in Love and Sports...until it isn't.

Are you ready to head back to Australia, and figure out how Lacey and Cleat are going to get their HEA? Well, then go download Capturing the Captain so you can find out!

If you read Outflanking the Flanker, then you'll recall that Lacey stepped in to help out Chloe and Andrew during that whole situation. You may also recall that Cleat is Andrew's teammate. When Cleat and Lacey first met at the bar, there was a spark. Now here we are shortly after the big event happened. Cleat is a drunk mess, and Lacey is trying to be protective of her new friends. These two are bickering, and get tossed out of the hospital. Cleat is too drunk to tell Lacey what hotel he's staying at, so she takes him back to her house. Upon arrival, Cleat (who is passed out) mumbles something about Lacey. She's ticked, so she leaves him in the car to sleep it off. Flash forward a little bit, and Lacey has to go off on an assignment. Cleat tags along, and they find themselves in a bit of trouble.

I want to recap the book a bit more, but I also don't want to go overboard. It's a fine line. Can I be honest? I struggled about with Lacey and Cleat's story. I also struggled with them as a couple. I just can't see it. I like them perfectly well as individuals, but as a couple it's a no. The premise of the story I enjoyed. It's hard because while we had just recently met Lacey, we didn't know about her history with this volunteer project. It all just seemed so random. When the suspense kicked in though, I was curious. I had to know what was going to happen with that, and how it was all going to wrap up. But again it just wasn't believable to me. I know it's fiction, it doesn't have to be believable. After Lacey and Cleat's big dramatic moment, I was wondering how this issue would be resolved. Who would do the grand gesture, and would it work? I can't lie, I enjoyed that part of the story. I also liked the setup for the next book in the series! I am curious about Carmen's story.

Thank you for reading my thoughts on Capturing the Captain. While the book wasn't a perfect fit for me, you might have a different feel for the book. So I do recommend that you pick it up. Maybe you'll vibe with Lacey and Cleat better than I did.

Laura

Outflanking the Flanker {a review}

All's fair in Love and Sports...until it isn't.

Friends, have you been looking for a new sports romance to read that features a Rugby player? How about a sports romance that has a stalker? How about a book that is set primarily in Paris? Well if that all sounds wonderful, take a look at Outflanking the Flanker by Nicole Phoenix!

In Outflanking the Flanker we meet Chloe and Andrew. Chloe is a travel writer and has just arrived in Paris. She booked this specific hotel room long in advance, but now they are saying they do not have her in the system. Since Chloe is a frequent traveler, she has documentation about her reservation, AND she can also tell when she's being fed a line. Chloe knows there must be some VIP that she was bumped for. Moments later, Andrew walks into the hotel, and is given the key to the room that Chloe had wanted. Needless to say, Chloe is ticked. Thankfully though Andrew manages to get her another room, and the room is comped. So yay for that. What happens next is a steamy moment in an elevator, a few meals, and then it's over. Or is it?

I went into Outflanking the Flanker not knowing much. I knew what the teaser told me, and it was enough to draw me in. I was not expecting the steamy elevator scene, I was not expecting a stalker, I was not expecting a brief vacation romance, and I was not expecting the big dramatic moment later in the book! With everything that happened in this book, I found myself fully invested. I had to know how it was going to play out, and how Chloe and Andrew would get their HEA. Thankfully everything wrapped up nicely, and the stage was set for the second book, Capturing the Captain. At the end of the day, I enjoyed the setting, I was intrigued by the characters, and the story was good. I am happy that I read the book, and am looking forward to future books by Nicole.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts. I recommend that you pick up Outflanking the Flanker. Whether you're a rugby fan, or just a general fan of romance, I think you might enjoy this one.

Laura

Fiery chemistry forces Chloe and Andrew to change their game plan, but there’s another player who’s competing to win, no matter who gets hurt.

Is it possible to find love halfway around the world…twice? And what will they have to sacrifice to keep it? Follow their story from Paris, France to Sydney, Australia and find out!

From New York Times bestselling author Aleatha Romig comes a brand-new romantic-suspense novel in the world of high finance, where success is sweet and revenge is sweeter.

Red Sin is a full-length novel and book one in the Sin Series. Red Sin will be available on October 19, 2021. I highly suggest reading White Ribbon in preparation for Red Sin. It will give you the necessary background information, while getting you hyped for the next book. White Ribbon is currently a free download.

Red is the color of blood, sacrifice, danger, and courage. It’s also associated with heat, passion, and sexuality. When two people meet unexpectedly with an inexplicable attraction that defies common understanding...it can be called RED SIN.

Julia and Van found one another in a shaken snow globe. Stranded in a blizzard, they embraced being two individuals with no last names. The plan was to walk away from each other with no regrets—until that plan changed.

Julia’s life was delivered a staggering blow the day she discovered her fiancé’s infidelity. The night she met a handsome stranger, one who showed her the possibility of a life filled with more than the fulfillment of expectations, she took a chance.

When it comes to business, Donovan Sherman is a wolf—a bloodthirsty carnivore who leaves wounded prey and victims in his wake. He learned from the best, his onetime nemesis and now-mentor, Lennox Demetri, who showed him that opportunities are only ripe for those willing to risk it all, a lesson Donovan took to heart.

With Julia McGrath, Donovan must decide if this beautiful woman who showed him the meaning of red sin will fall victim as his prey or if after experiencing the unbridled passion, there is more that he wants.

Southern Sunshine {a review}

The final book in the Southern series is now available! I don't know whether to cheer or cry. Cheer because I have been impatiently anticipating Southern Sunshine and it's now available. Cry because Southern Sunshine is the end of the series and I'm not ready to let this cast of characters go. I know, I know, Laura they are just fictional people in a fictional town, BUT I DON'T CARE!

In Southern Sunshine we catch up with Reed, and are re-introduced to Hazel. You may recall at the end of Southern Secrets we had a brief introduction with her character. Anyways...Reed and Hazel have been quietly seeing each other for a couple of months. Reed is getting ready to leave town as he has joined the military, and Hazel has her eyes on college. That is until one night changes how things will work. Hazel tells her Grandpa that she is pregnant, and that the dad doesn't know. Grandpa being the smart man that he is, knows exactly who the father is. Hazel does attempt to reach out to Reed, but he never replies or reaches out. Instead Reed pushes himself harder, and is even more determined to stay away from town. Flash forward almost 6 years, and Reed has been injured in the line of duty. He now has 30 days to determine if he is going to re-up or not. During this time, he has made the difficult choice to return home. All it takes is a phone call to his dad (Casey), and a plane is waiting. Meanwhile back at home, Hazel has just learned that her Grandpa has died. She needs to return to town to get his estate in order. Nervous doesn't begin to describe her feelings. She's stayed away on purpose. So what happens next? Ahh my friends, I think you can imagine...

I love this series. I love these characters. I love the setting. Each and every story I get fully invested into. I can't help it, it's just how it works out. It really wasn't any different for Reed and Hazel's story. I loved how we were able to see their beginning, how Hazel attempted to reach Reed to let him know about the pregnancy, and how they eventually came back to each other. I also loved getting to catch up with all the previous characters, and see the close knit bond that they all share. Then there was Savannah and how she was bringing Hazel into the fold. That warmed my heart. We also were able to learn why Reed desperately wanted to leave town, and why he deactivated all his social medias. Getting that full picture helps to understand him as a character. While I loved everything about the book, Southern Sunshine felt different. It didn't have the suspense, and it didn't really have the big dramatic moment for our couple. It just felt very smooth and seamless. So I can't help but wonder if that is the route that Natasha Madison is going to take the Southern Weddings series. Less romantic suspense, and more just straight romance with little conflict. Regardless I'll read it and probably love it. It's Natasha Madison, how can I not love the books.

Go read Southern Sunshine! You'll get to witness Reed and Hazel's journey toward their HEA, and you'll get to catch up with all the characters you've come to know and love throughout the series. While it's the conclusion to the Southern series, you will also get the setup for Southern Weddings. So that right there will have you anticipating what's to come. Or maybe that's just me.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts, Laura

Reed

I never wanted to be a cowboy, living in a small town was suffocating.

The military was my out.

I saw every place I ever wanted and everything that nightmares are made of.

Until I almost lost my life and then I ended up back home.

Hazel

Finding out that I was pregnant the night before I left for college changed everything. I left that small town and vowed to never return.

When my grandfather died, I had no choice but to go back home.

The plan was just for two weeks.

I thought it would be quick and easy, until he was standing at the back door asking questions.

Secrets never stay secrets for long in this town.

Danger on the Mountain {a review}

Danger on the Mountain is the third book in the Marshall Brothers series by Carolyn LaRoche, and it is now available! If you are looking for a romantic suspense book, then consider picking this one up.

In Danger on the Mountain, we meet Layla and Ben. Layla is an attorney who a lot of people are not a fan of. She's had some high profile cases, but this last one is by far the most difficult. Flash forward a little bit, and Layla learns that her dad has passed. She wasn't close to him, after all he left when she was 3. So learning that he left his estate to her was a bit shocking. Packing up and heading to the town where he lived, Layla meets with the lawyer. It is also at the lawyer's office where Layla first meets Ben. Ben had helped Layla's dad a few times, and so he left Ben a little something as a thank you. These two immediately at odds, and honestly Layla wants nothing to do with her dad's property. Until a life change has her changing her tune. Layla is determined to make it work, and is enjoying this new lifestyle. Then she finds out who the neighbor is. A bit of forced proximity, and a suspenseful story later, these two find their HEA.

When I read the teaser for Danger on the Mountain, I had high hopes. As the story unfolded, I was still intrigued. Ben's introduction had me thinking good thoughts. I love a good enemies to lovers story. Yet something was missing for me. I don't mind a slowburn romance if they are done right. I don't mind a character dealing with their past, and the cloud that hangs over their present life. But there was something about Layla and Ben that just didn't click with me. It didn't feel like I was getting a full view of their relationship. Yes they were enemies. Yes they became lovers. But it didn't flow well. It felt like chunks of their story was missing. Maybe that's just me. I'm sure it's just me. I liked the concept. I enjoyed the suspense. I enjoyed the who-dun-it aspect. But the rest was a miss. I did give this 3.5 stars on Goodreads, but I'm not completely sold on that rating. As I sit on it more, I feel like it could be a solid 3.

With books like this, I often wonder, should I recommend it? Would someone else enjoy this book even though it didn't mesh with me? And the answer almost always comes back to yes. Yes I would recommend this book. It may hit different with another reader. It may be what that reader needs at the time. If anything maybe the reader would laugh at the situation with the cows. So yes, if you feel so inclined, go pick up Danger on the Mountain by Carolyn LaRoche. When you read it, come back and let me know your thoughts. Maybe I over looked something. Maybe I didn't. Oh the joy of books.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts,
Laura

It pained him to hear the roughness of her voice. A solid reminder that he'd almost lost her. The battle that had waged inside him since meeting her had amped back up to full scale.
When the nurse was gone, Ben tried again to explain himself. "I was engaged once, you know."
"Nope. I had no idea," Layla answered without looking up from her drink. Her apparent indifference hit him right in the heart. "You haven't said much about yourself."
"Her name was Lauren. According to her, I'm not fit for a serious adult relationship."
"Just because it didn't work out with her you consider yourself unable to care about anyone else?"
Man, she isn’t making this easy on me. "It goes much deeper than that, Layla. I've seen things, done things."
"We all have regrets, believe me." She sounded sad and a little wistful. Like she had some serious secrets of her own.
"I was in the Air Force. Special forces. My job… well, things happened. Things I could never get over. Lauren knew it, and now, after messing things up with her so badly, so do I."
Layla set her cup down on the bedside table. "So, because things didn't work out with one relationship, you left your home, your family, and a job I think you loved to come live on a mountain, sentencing yourself to a lifetime of loneliness and self-pity?"
He exhaled slowly. "You don't know what it's like to live in my head. Besides, didn't you basically do the same thing?"
"This isn't about me!"
He leaned forward, looking her in the eyes. "Are you saying you don't have any secrets of your own? Secrets that sent you to the same isolated mountain as me? Secrets that seem to want to see you suffer, maybe even die?"
Layla threw her hands in the air, knocking her cup over. Thankfully it was empty. "I'm not the one saying I want to kiss you but I can't because of my messed up past."
"Maybe not. You certainly haven't shared all the details though, have you?"
"I never kissed you."
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"It has everything to do with it." Layla yawned and pulled her blanket up to her chin. "I think we're done discussing whose life is more messed up. I'm pretty sleepy now anyway."
He jumped up and paced the room, unwilling to accept her dismissal without making her understand. "You just don't get it. I'm broken, Layla, and I'm no good for you. Even if I wish I were with every fiber of my being."
She pounded a fist against the bed beside her. "Don't you think I should get a say in this? I mean, maybe I'm broken too? Maybe we would help each other? You kissed me. Not just once. I know you felt what I did. Are you willing to give up what you might have because of what you once lost?"
"I've lost so much more than you know." He sat down again then leaned forward resting his elbows on his knees and holding his head in his hands. "It's better for you if you don't get involved with me, believe me."
"Well, it seems you’ve made up my mind for me, so there's really nothing else to talk about. Have a good night, Ben. What's left of it anyway." She rolled away from him.
