Danger on the Mountain {a review}

Danger on the Mountain is the third book in the Marshall Brothers series by Carolyn LaRoche, and it is now available! If you are looking for a romantic suspense book, then consider picking this one up.

In Danger on the Mountain, we meet Layla and Ben. Layla is an attorney who a lot of people are not a fan of. She's had some high profile cases, but this last one is by far the most difficult. Flash forward a little bit, and Layla learns that her dad has passed. She wasn't close to him, after all he left when she was 3. So learning that he left his estate to her was a bit shocking. Packing up and heading to the town where he lived, Layla meets with the lawyer. It is also at the lawyer's office where Layla first meets Ben. Ben had helped Layla's dad a few times, and so he left Ben a little something as a thank you. These two immediately at odds, and honestly Layla wants nothing to do with her dad's property. Until a life change has her changing her tune. Layla is determined to make it work, and is enjoying this new lifestyle. Then she finds out who the neighbor is. A bit of forced proximity, and a suspenseful story later, these two find their HEA.

When I read the teaser for Danger on the Mountain, I had high hopes. As the story unfolded, I was still intrigued. Ben's introduction had me thinking good thoughts. I love a good enemies to lovers story. Yet something was missing for me. I don't mind a slowburn romance if they are done right. I don't mind a character dealing with their past, and the cloud that hangs over their present life. But there was something about Layla and Ben that just didn't click with me. It didn't feel like I was getting a full view of their relationship. Yes they were enemies. Yes they became lovers. But it didn't flow well. It felt like chunks of their story was missing. Maybe that's just me. I'm sure it's just me. I liked the concept. I enjoyed the suspense. I enjoyed the who-dun-it aspect. But the rest was a miss. I did give this 3.5 stars on Goodreads, but I'm not completely sold on that rating. As I sit on it more, I feel like it could be a solid 3.

With books like this, I often wonder, should I recommend it? Would someone else enjoy this book even though it didn't mesh with me? And the answer almost always comes back to yes. Yes I would recommend this book. It may hit different with another reader. It may be what that reader needs at the time. If anything maybe the reader would laugh at the situation with the cows. So yes, if you feel so inclined, go pick up Danger on the Mountain by Carolyn LaRoche. When you read it, come back and let me know your thoughts. Maybe I over looked something. Maybe I didn't. Oh the joy of books.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts,
Laura

It pained him to hear the roughness of her voice. A solid reminder that he'd almost lost her. The battle that had waged inside him since meeting her had amped back up to full scale.
When the nurse was gone, Ben tried again to explain himself. "I was engaged once, you know."
"Nope. I had no idea," Layla answered without looking up from her drink. Her apparent indifference hit him right in the heart. "You haven't said much about yourself."
"Her name was Lauren. According to her, I'm not fit for a serious adult relationship."
"Just because it didn't work out with her you consider yourself unable to care about anyone else?"
Man, she isn’t making this easy on me. "It goes much deeper than that, Layla. I've seen things, done things."
"We all have regrets, believe me." She sounded sad and a little wistful. Like she had some serious secrets of her own.
"I was in the Air Force. Special forces. My job… well, things happened. Things I could never get over. Lauren knew it, and now, after messing things up with her so badly, so do I."
Layla set her cup down on the bedside table. "So, because things didn't work out with one relationship, you left your home, your family, and a job I think you loved to come live on a mountain, sentencing yourself to a lifetime of loneliness and self-pity?"
He exhaled slowly. "You don't know what it's like to live in my head. Besides, didn't you basically do the same thing?"
"This isn't about me!"
He leaned forward, looking her in the eyes. "Are you saying you don't have any secrets of your own? Secrets that sent you to the same isolated mountain as me? Secrets that seem to want to see you suffer, maybe even die?"
Layla threw her hands in the air, knocking her cup over. Thankfully it was empty. "I'm not the one saying I want to kiss you but I can't because of my messed up past."
"Maybe not. You certainly haven't shared all the details though, have you?"
"I never kissed you."
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"It has everything to do with it." Layla yawned and pulled her blanket up to her chin. "I think we're done discussing whose life is more messed up. I'm pretty sleepy now anyway."
He jumped up and paced the room, unwilling to accept her dismissal without making her understand. "You just don't get it. I'm broken, Layla, and I'm no good for you. Even if I wish I were with every fiber of my being."
She pounded a fist against the bed beside her. "Don't you think I should get a say in this? I mean, maybe I'm broken too? Maybe we would help each other? You kissed me. Not just once. I know you felt what I did. Are you willing to give up what you might have because of what you once lost?"
"I've lost so much more than you know." He sat down again then leaned forward resting his elbows on his knees and holding his head in his hands. "It's better for you if you don't get involved with me, believe me."
"Well, it seems you’ve made up my mind for me, so there's really nothing else to talk about. Have a good night, Ben. What's left of it anyway." She rolled away from him.

Sacred {a review}

If you've been following my journey through reading the Savage Falls Sinners MC series, then you already know that I am hooked on this story! Well, allow me to rephrase that. I am hooked on the Sinners MC storyline. The storyline between Sadie Ray and her guys is just a side story for me. It is the club business that keeps me coming back for more.

Since the Savage Falls Sinners MC series is a continuation, I have to be careful regarding my recap. Just know that in Sacred we pick up right where we left off in Sacrifice. Dane is missing. Sinners are injured or dead after that brawl. Sadie, Rhett, and Wes are worried about Dane. Plus there was that bombshell dropped about Dane's family. Sacred tells the story of what happens next. How Dane was found, what is going to happen next to locate Darren Creed, and how that big showdown is going to happen. There is also a little side story regarding Wes's mom, and how that relates to Ray. It's a lot. Then there's the relationship stuff between Sadie, Rhett, Dane, and Wes. Of course at the end of Sacred we are hit with another cliffhanger. So be prepared.

As you can see, I didn't say much about the book. I gave general info that you could pull from the teaser, and that's it. That's because saying too much more would result in spoilers, and we can't have that.

So my thoughts...I couldn't put the book down. From the first page to the last I was hooked. I loved the storyline regarding Dane and his history. All those things that he has forgotten are brought to light, and it's a lot. Then there was the storyline regarding Ray and Wes's mom, and that was eye opening. When it was time for the big showdown, I was intrigued. I had to know how it was going to play out, and what it would mean for the two clubs. I will say that Sacred seemed to have a lot more "bedroom" scenes with Sadie and the guys than the previous books. It was almost over kill for me, but it's just how the book was. When I got to the end of Sacred, I was not surprised to see the cliffhanger. Not one bit. That being said, everything that happened in that last chapter? WHAT? What is going on there? Was this all brought on by Wes's dad? Or is it Evan coming back to wreak havoc on the group? WHAT IS HAPPENING? Also, I'm curious about what is going to happen with Quinn and Crank, as well as River and Jax. Hopefully Caitlyn Dare will create books that focus on those characters. A reader can wish, right?

Is it time for Sever to be released yet? I need to know how this ends! UGH!

If you are a fan of dark romance, the enemies to lovers trope, bully romances, MC romances, and/or reverse harem romances, then go read this series. You'll need to start with Savage, but trust me it will be worth it. Plus, if you're a Kindle Unlimited subscriber you can read them for free with your membership!

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts,
Laura

I knew there was more to the threat than we first thought…

I didn’t know that when the truth came out everything would change.

In the aftermath of Darren Creed ripping through the Sinners, the club is in chaos. And Dane will need us now more than ever as he comes to terms with the secrets of his childhood and the scars he bears.

Rhett, Wes, and I are determined to keep him grounded, determined not to lose him to the monsters that haunt his dreams.

Because some monsters are real.

And before we get our happy-ever-after, we’re all going to have to face the things we’re afraid of most.

SACRED is a full length dark enemies-to-lovers/bully romance. This is a why choose novel, meaning the main character has more than one love interest. It is book three in the series and must be read after SAVAGE and SACRIFICE.

About the book:

It was the only life he knew... until it wasn't.

It's been a year since a Humvee accident changed Navy SEAL Trevor Hawthorne's life forever, the adrenaline rush that was the only life he knew now gone. In its place is a life where he'll have to constantly prove to everyone that he's as good as, if not better than the man he was before.

For Taos native Claudia Romero, life is about graduating from a demanding Physical Therapy program so she can show people back home that she's more than the girl who made a very public mistake so long ago. And with one more internship in Virginia Beach to complete, she's almost there.   But when she runs into the man she had a one-night-stand with a year and a half earlier, there's no denying that the attraction they felt that night is still there, stronger than ever.

But what happens when she learns he's no longer the same man he used to be? And with a job waiting for her in Taos as soon as she graduates, can she find room in her life for love?

Make You Miss Me {a review}

Happy Release Day to B. Celeste! Today is the day that her latest book, Make You Miss Me, is available for purchase. If you are a fan of age gap romances, single dad romances, and/or slow burn romances, then go to Amazon and grab this book!

In Make You Miss Me, we meet Stevie and Fletcher. Stevie recently moved into her house after a divorce that shattered her. She's rebuilding her life, has a new job, a new house, and is finding new friends. It's a lot of change, and she's struggling. Her divorce from Hunter wasn't what she wanted. She saw forever with him. One day the "welcoming committee" stops by her house. They make their introductions, welcome her to the neighborhood, and then promptly hit her with all the HOA rules that she's violating. A quick phone call to her dad, and he's there to help. Until the lawn mower breaks, and a gorgeous man appears to offer the use of his. That gorgeous neighbor is Fletcher Miller, also known as her ex's commanding officer. This realization causes Stevie to panic a bit, and memories of Hunter resurface. Flash forward a few days when Stevie is at work, and her principal calls her into the office to discuss a new student. Dominic is transferring to the school, and is on the autism spectrum. (in my opinion, it sounds like this school does not have a lot of para support, and is not really neurodivergent friendly.) Stevie happens to have experience working with neurodivergent students, and so she welcomes him into her classroom with open arms. When Dominic arrives to class, with his dad, Stevie is shocked to discover that Fletcher is Dominic's dad. From this point on, things just build and the book becomes difficult to put down.

Make You Miss Me was simply wonderful. While I couldn't understand the level of grief that Stevie was dealing with, I can see how it was needed for the story. Although I do think that there is more to her grief than just the divorce, but perhaps I'm wrong. Maybe her parents relationship also played a part in her grief and anxiety. ANYWAYS...I'll tell you now that once Stevie and Fletcher met, I did not want to put my kindle down. I had to know what happened next! I had to know how their relationship would build. I had to know when their friendship would turn into a relationship. I had to know when Stevie was going to realize that Fletcher wanted her. Basically I just had to know when these two were going to get together. Of course I also had to know how Nicki (Nic/Dominic) was going to handle his dad dating his teacher. (Also, Stevie as Nicki's teacher was just spectacular. My heart loved it.) Witnessing the relationship between Stevie and Fletcher grow and evolve showed love, compassion, empathy, support, and even a little tough love when necessary. It was wonderful. It was as though it was a real couple going through real things, standing by each other, and being there to support the other. It wasn't a sweet little Hallmark movie romance, this was very much real life situations, and I loved that. When the big dramatic moment happened, I felt it all. I could feel the anger, the hurt, the frustration, the passion, but I could also feel the love. The love that Fletcher showed to his son, and how in that time he was making the choice to protect his son, while also laying some truths on Stevie. I just loved it all, and am so glad I read this book.

I really think you should go read Make You Miss Me.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts,
Laura

Stevie Foster thought her happy ever after would come easily after saying “I do” to her high school sweetheart at nineteen.

But twelve years later, she finds herself divorced, settling into a new home, in a new town, with a new job as an elementary teacher trying to pick up the pieces as she goes.

On top of struggling to cope with the future she always wanted versus the one she’s been dealt, she soon realizes that her new neighbor is a strict, stone-faced man she’s all too familiar with.

Lieutenant Colonel Fletcher Miller.

The man once in charge of her ex-husband’s unit.

And as if the reminder across the street of what she lost wasn’t painful enough, she also becomes his young son’s teacher.

A single dad. A divorcee. A second chance at love neither knew they’d get.
