Wildcat by Rebecca Jenshak {a review}

Wildcat is a full-length sports romance with a hot-as-puck hero, the coach’s daughter, and an unfortunate case of mistaken identity. The Wildcats are the youngest team in the NHL. On the ice, they’re cocky, determined, and ready to take the league by storm. Off the ice? They’re always up for a wild time.

Wildcat is the first book in the Wildcats hockey series by Rebecca Jenshak, and it is set in Minnesota. Wildcat tells the story of how Leo Lohan and Scarlett Miller met, fell for each other, and ultimately found their happily ever after. Of course their journey towards their HEA was not without issue. This took work, trust, honesty, and communication.

Okay quick recap: Leo is a professional hockey player who is also attending college on a part time basis. One night he is attending a trivia night at a local bar, and it is there that he meets Scarlett. Scarlett has recently returned from London, and is trying to find her footing. Of course she also needs to tell her parents that she's dropped out of college, and is pursuing photography full time. But before she can do that, she's helping out at the bar her friend works at. The only problem is that she's a mess. Making drinks was a failure. Serving tables was an absolute wreck. She's pretty certain the owner will not be asking her back. Then though she meets Leo, and she's captivated. This man intrigues her, and even though she's still mending her broken heart, she can't help but be drawn to him. Next thing we know, Leo and Scarlett are having an amazing night together. Leo promises to call, but fails to do so as his schedule is jam packed. It isn't until he arrives at the team party his coach is hosting that he sees Scarlett again. It is also at this party that he realizes she's coach's daughter. It is here that Scarlett finds out Leo isn't just a college student, but also a professional hockey player. She's sworn off athletes after everything that happened with Rhyse, so this cannot happen again.

I LOVE books that are set in my state! LOVE THEM! Add in the fact that this is a hockey romance, and that just made it even better. I'm a sucker for hockey romance. Everything about this story had me smiling. From the meet-cute, to the steamy night spent together, to the moments until they saw each other again, and to the realization of who they both are. LOVED IT. Together Leo and Scarlett flourished. Their love, and attraction, just radiated off the pages. I am just completely taken by these characters, and their story! When Rhyse showed up? OOOH, that was a lot, and had me immediately disliking the man. It wasn't until that whole scenario was wrapped up that I was even able to think positively of him. During all that my heart went out to Scarlett. She had to once again deal with the repercussions of Rhyse. Fixing her relationship with Leo wasn't going to be easy, but she knows he is worth it. Leo knows Scarlett is his forever, and this time apart has been rough. Leo met his dream girl all those months ago, and after quite the journey, he now has her by his side.

Obviously I loved the setting of this book. You can't go wrong with a book set where you live! I was drawn to the characters when we met a few of them in Wild Love, and Wildcat just had me falling even harder. As for the storyline, well I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did rate this as a 4 star read on Goodreads, as it was just missing that little something extra to push it to 5 stars.

If you enjoy hockey romances between a player and the coach's daughter, then you need to read this one. I think you'll enjoy it quite a bit.

Thank you for reading my thoughts on Wildcat. I am looking forward to reading Wild About You when it releases in May.

I met my dream girl.

That’s right. She’s stunning and the worst bartender I’ve ever seen.

I should have gone home and gone to sleep—dream girl or not. I had an early morning and the season was starting soon. But when she threatened me with boy band karaoke I couldn't help myself. I went. The stars aligned.

I have never felt more alive or wanted anyone more than I want her.

When it’s time for me to head on my annual pre-season boys trip, I barely let her go.

It’s been a week and I can’t stop thinking about her.

Except there she is. Right here at the Wildcat’s kickoff party.

And as luck would have it, my dream girl is the coach’s youngest daughter.

But everyone knows the coach’s daughter is off limits. Right?

Joy of Christmas {book tag}

Today I am participating in the Joy of Christmas book tag that was created by Samantha at Novels and Nonsense. I stumbled across the tag when a google search led me to Erin's post at The Book Nut.

Let's jump into these 8 questions!

My Unexpected Surprise by Piper Rayne {a review}

My Unexpected Surprise is now available! This is the 5th, full length, book in the Greene Family series by Piper Rayne, and I was so ready to catch up with the family.

We return to Sunrise Bay where we find Fisher rushing to the hospital after Jed's daughter was injured. Once there he sees Allie for the first time in 5 months. She's back in town, and is now a nurse at the local hospital. While Fisher is happy to see her, he's also shocked. You see, Allie is pregnant. Five months pregnant. Fisher is about to find out that he's going to be a father. To say he's shocked is an understatement. One thing Fisher knows is that he's not meant to be a father, or have a family. Yet on the other hand, he's drawn to Allie, and can feel the draw towards her. What started off as one night together is changing their lives. Two babies are coming soon, and due to an incident at Allie's apartment, she is now living with Fisher. Can these two find a way to reconnect or will are they destined to co-parent?

I absolutely loved Fisher and Allie's story! It was such a wonderful addition to the Greene Family series. Of course the fact that it's the surprise pregnancy trope also had me loving it. Add in Fisher trying to go all alpha, and Allie shutting that down, just had me smiling like a fool. It was so good! Then there was the appearance of all those Bailey family members! Ahh it's so good to catch up with them. Oh, but then there is Ethel, Dori, and Midge. These ladies are hilarious, and up to their usual shenanigans. I am curious how Dori managed to pull off the apartment situation. It's awfully convenient how long it took for repairs to happen. Also, Ethel and Dori showing up at the doctors office when Fisher and Allie were there for their appointment? GOLD! These ladies are BOLD! That whole exchange had me laughing. (and shaking my head in disbelief.)

Towards the latter half of chapter 24 things happened, and they happened fast. The ending of that chapter, and a good portion of chapter 25 had me a gigantic mess. Now part of that is because I am an emotional reader, but the other part is because of personal experience. So everything that Allie was dealing with brought back memories of 9 years ago, and well tears happened. Everything that Allie and Fisher went through demonstrated their love for their children. Of course what Allie told Fisher before hand also had him flashing back to memories of his mom, and that just added to all the emotions.

This book showed how the grand plans you have drawn up in your head can be tossed out the window at any time. Allie was looking for her traditional fairy tale, and she had a fairy tale just not in the way she envisioned. Or as the authors wrote:

"Sometimes things aren't as perfect as you want them to be, but in the end, it doesn't mean they aren't your fairy tale."

My Unexpected Surprise hit me in the feels, and I loved every moment of it. I loved catching up with the family, seeing the Dori, Ethel, and Midge up to their antics, reconnecting with the Baileys, and of course getting the setup for a FUTURE book. Not the next in the series, but this book has to happen soon. Plus there was that bit about Rylan and Calista. So I'm looking forward to the upcoming Greene Family books!

If you like small town romances, and forced proximity, along with unexpected pregnancy stories, then please go check out My Unexpected Surprise. If you're new to the Greene Family series, no worries, you don't need to start at the beginning. They are all standalone stories, so you can jump in at any point.

Thank you for stopping by to read my thoughts on this latest Piper Rayne book.

Laura

I never thought of myself as dad material.
Until my one-night stand showed up in my small Alaskan town five months pregnant.

But I don’t shy away from responsibility. First, because I’m a Greene and not to boast but we’re kind of a big deal in Sunrise Bay. Second, I’m the Sheriff.

I couldn’t have predicted how protective I’d become for the safety of her and my unborn baby to the point of asking her to move in with me and be my roommate.

Just when I think I have the situation under control, another surprise knocks me over, but it only spurs me to double down.

I’ll be the first to admit, I didn’t think it through. Somewhere between the dinners, the TV show binging, the doctor appointments, and me walking in on her naked, lines blurred.

In what feels like warp speed, my bachelor for life status is in jeopardy and I’m fighting for the most important thing of all—my family.

#12 Johnny Decker. Star quarterback for the Boston Tomcats. Two-time Super Bowl MVP...a decade ago. Nickname: Decker the Panty Wrecker.

I get tackled for a living by men who are built like rhinos. I could take the wings off a fly with a football from 30 yards away. (I wouldn’t, but I could.) Being a veteran quarterback means I’m a mentally alert, fine-tuned athletic machine who can make split-second decisions.

It’s my job to anticipate what’s going to happen next and adapt. But I couldn’t have anticipated the death of our beloved team owner.

His estranged daughter Hannah Strong is a finance nerd from New York. She knows less than nothing about football. Know what she didn’t anticipate? Inheriting the Boston Tomcats.

She’s stubborn, uptight, infuriating, and wrong about absolutely everything—from pizza to how to run my team. And I don’t want to talk about how good she looks in a skirt. Or daydream about how good she’d look out of it.

Really, I don’t.

I’m not Decker the Panty Wrecker anymore—I’ve changed.

I can’t stop arguing with her.

Or thinking about her.

I thought I had a winning play.

But Hannah Strong changed everything.

ABOUT KAYLEY LORING
Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017 she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn't allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s an Amazon Top 25 bestselling author who is breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.

Rest assured that her funny sexy sweet romances have no cheating or cliffhangers, and always have HEAs!

My Anticipated Reads in 2022

The other day Aven Ellis posted her 2022 book plans over in her Facebook group. That made me remember that I still needed to make an anticipated reads list for the upcoming year. Now seeing as how I tend to read more indie authors than those from the large publishing houses, I am not fully aware of upcoming releases. That being said, with a little help of their websites, author reader groups, and of course goodreads, I was able to pull together a nice little list.

So what books am I anticipating in 2022? Let's break it down by author. It only makes sense to start with Aven.

Aven Ellis

  • Caught Looking: This is the 4th book in the Soaring Eagles series (Meghan & Chase)
  • Lord of the Manor: 1st book in the new Aristocrats series (Amelia & Nicholas)
  • Out of Play: 4th book in the British Isles Billionaires series (Declan)
  • Modern Royals #5 (James)
  • Stonebridge United #1 (Noah & Violet)

Samantha Lovelock

  • Wounded Things: Folkestone Sins finale
  • TBD: Wonderland Novellas #2
  • TBD: Wonderland Novellas #3

Natasha Madison

  • Only One Mistake: Only One #6 (Michael & Jillian)
  • Only One Love: Only One #7 (Wilson & Franny)
  • Only One Forever: Only One #8 (Dylan & Alex)
  • Southern Weddings #1 (maybe?)

Gina Azzi

  • The Hustler: 8th book in the Boston Hawks series
  • The Score Keeper: 9th book in the Boston Hawks series

Helena Hunting

  • Love on the Lake: Lakeside #2 (Teagan & Aaron)
  • Starry-Eyed Love: Spark House #2 (London & Jackson)
  • Maverick Waters (Title TBD)

Ashley Munoz

  • The Joker: Rake Forge series finale

Kristin Turnage

  • The Edge of Redemption: Book 3 in the Edge series (Jace & AJ)

Caitlyn Dare

  • Ruin: Red Ridge Sinners MC #1
  • Red Ridge Sinners #2

Kim Loraine

  • The Baby Proposition: Anything For Love #1 (Maverick & Clara)
  • Reined In: Ryker Ranch #5
  • Drive Me Wild: Wilde Horse Ranch #3 (Killian & Jameson)

Nola Marie

  • Break Me Down: Sons of Sin #4
  • Shed My Skin: Sons of Sin #5

April Canavan

  • Breach Point: Birch Fire Department #2
  • Escape Route: Birch Fire Department #3
  • Pulling Rank: Birch Fire Department #4
  • Strike Team: Birch Fire Department #5

Piper Rayne

  • My Famous Frenemy: Greene Family #6
  • A Greene Family Vacation
  • My Scorned Best Friend: Greene Family #7
  • My Fake Fiancee: Greene Family #8

Kennedy Ryan

  • The Close-Up: Hollywood Renaissance #1.5
  • Score: Hollywood Renaissance #2

That is a lot of books to keep my eyes on. Thank goodness for my Google calendar. Now most of these do not have release dates yet either, so keeping a list is a must for me. Also, my gut tells me that Kristin Turnage will release a second book in 2022, but first I need to survive Jace and AJ's story.

What is on your anticipated reads list? Any suggestions for what I should add? Oh, and that Southern Weddings bullet point is just me wishful thinking. Really though I'll read anything that Natasha Madison releases.

I'm curious to see what else will be added to my list!

As I was preparing for my first ever Bookmas (blogmas), I fully admit that I did a google search for seasonal book tags. That search lead me to Zezee with Books blog, and this 12 days of Christmas tag. The tag was originally posted on the Falling Down the Book Hole blog back in 2014.

Well I've decided to participate.Thankfully tags like this can be timeless, so we can over look the fact that I'm sharing a tag from 7 years ago.

Duched series by Xavier Neal

Xavier Neal has just re-released the Duched trilogy!

The Duched trilogy is a laugh out loud royal romantic comedy that features a charming playboy prince, and an art student who loves to knock him off his throne. This previously published series has been updated with new covers, as well as new content!

This trilogy follows Brie Sanders, and Kellan Kenningston. The books must be read in order, and the first two books will end in a cliffhanger. So let's jump into this opposites attract rom com, and find out what happens with our couple.

Duched

I, Kellan Kenningston, am known for being three things:

The 2nd Prince of Doctenn - it's honestly for the best that I probably won't ever rule the country - my big brother is much better at keeping his royal jewels in his pants than I am.

Duke of Rockbridge - oh so not my idea. It was a royal decree or won in a poker game or something equally as eye-rolling.

And king of one-night stands - okay, well, I was until one mouthy, American art student knocked me off of that throne.

Now, I'm embarrassingly domesticated.

I remember to close the curtains at fancy hotels.

I've learned to cook since the woman I'm crazy about can barely microwave popcorn.

And most importantly, I've stop dragging our family's sacred name through the mud.

What do I plan to do next?

Turn the love of my life into a duchess, of course.

At least that was the plan until my father stepped in and duched it all up...

Royally Duched

When Brie Sanders unexpectedly falls head over heels for the playboy of Doctenn, Prince Kellan Kenningston, Duke of Rockbridge, she highly underestimates the risks he is willing to take to give their love a chance.

After dealing with an emergency, family disagreements, and a media nightmare, the two of them are forced to wade through the unfriendly waters of being a royal couple.

Traditions will be broken. Loyalty will be tested. And relationships will be redefined.

Royally Duched Up

Preparing to marry Kellan Kenningston, Prince of Doctenn, Duke of Rockbridge, hasn't gone as smoothly as Brie Sanders was hoping. However, her fiancee who seems hell bent on breaking traditions is equally hell bent on giving her the special day she's always dreamed of. After their whirlwind wedding and hot honeymoon, the two embark on the adventure known as happily ever after.

It isn't long before old issues arise, unexpected challenges are presented, and new foes are exposed.

While the royal couple knows their life together isn't going to be easy, neither is prepared for the heartaches and hardships that lie ahead.

Link by Anna Brooks {a review}

Link is the 9th book in the Guarding Her series from Anna Brooks, and it is now available!

Lincoln (aka Link) was a bodyguard for many years. In fact that is how he and Oakley initially met. She was a nanny for a family, and he was a bodyguard for the family. One night, at an event, Oakley had a bit much to drink, and decided that it was the perfect time to make her move on Link. She's been attracted to him for a while, so it just made sense. Link shot her down. Oakley was crushed. The two parted ways. Until the night that Lincoln shows up to a wedding that Oakley is at. One of Oakley's sisters is a wedding planner, and she needed Oakley's assistance. Oakley and Lincoln end up talking, which leads to him giving her his room key, which then results in a night spent together. All is going fabulously until Oakley slips out overnight. Then she decides to relocate to Warrenville. Essentially she's running. Lincoln lets her run, until he feels she's ran long enough. Then he puts his plan in motion.

Now I'm brand new to the Guarding Her series by Anna Brooks, and after reading Link I need to go back and read the previous books in the series. (and yes, I've already downloaded Surface.) Anna Brooks has hooked me in with her writing, and I am loving every moment of it.

So seeing as I am new to the series, I geeked out when Mack Ryder was mentioned. It took me a bit, until outside The Tap, to realize that Wilder and Frankie were the same characters from Wilder. I tell ya, I was tired. As soon as realization hit though, I was all giddy. After all, I've been thoroughly enjoying the Ryder Ranch series! Also, I love when series cross over like that!

As for the story between Oakley and Lincoln, I was all in. From the one night stand, to Oakley relocating, to Lincoln relocating, to Onnika (her twin) visiting, to everything that happened after her visit, I could not put the book down. Now I will say that at times Lincoln was a bit over the top for me. Maybe it was his because of his profession, maybe it was just him being overprotective, maybe he is just that intense. No matter what though I enjoyed it.

And now I'm curious about Foster and Onnika. What happened there? Is he going to get his own book? Oh, and that set up for Callen's story? UM WHAT? Need it.

Please go read Link. He's an alpha. He's a grump. She's amazing, and full of sunshine. These two are destined to be together, and their story is just so good.

Thank you for reading my thoughts on this book. Please let me know if you read it!

Laura

Even though she knew I’d always catch her, she still had a bad habit of running.

As fun as our little game was, I was getting tired of the chase.

Especially when one night of combustible passion proved we found the reward we both deserved.

Once I finally had her right where I wanted, her world was tragically torn apart, and she needed me now more than ever.

Honored to be the man to pick up the pieces, I didn’t realize putting her back together would come with a price.

Because once she was whole again, she wasn’t the same woman I had fallen in love with.

Meet Anna Brooks

The first time Anna tried to read a romance novel, her hair caught on fire when she leaned over a candle to sneak a peek at her mom’s Harlequin. She thinks being hit on the head with a shirtless Fabio until the smoke cleared is what sparked the flame for her love of romance.

Anna was born in Wisconsin, but currently lives in Texas with her husband and two boys.

She writes sexy romance that always has a happy ending and loves bringing characters back for cameos. Less than six degrees of separation connects any of her novels.

When she’s not writing or reading, she’s watching reruns of her favorite romcoms, talking to her dog and cat like they’re human, eating carbs, or practicing hand lettering.

She loves to hear from readers and can be found on social media as @annabrooksauth everywhere.

Jock Romeo by Sara Ney {a review}

The latest addition to Sara Ney's Jock Hard series is now available! Jock Romeo introduces us to Roman, and in this book he finds his HEA with Lilly. Now if you read Jock Reign, then you may recognize Lilly, after all she is Eliza's friend and former roommate.

This book starts when Lilly and Roman are freshman. They both attended the same party, and wind up sitting in the stairwell talking for a while. When their time together is up, Lilly gives Roman the bracelet she had made. Flash forward a couple of years. Roman has just returned to the states after having spent a semester abroad. After arriving at his parents house, he realizes he can't do this any longer. He needs to move out. Thankfully he befriended Ashley when he was in England, and Ashley mentioned that his brother Jack might have a spare room. So naturally Roman moves in with Jack and Eliza. On move in day he is carrying a box out to the garage, and is taken by the beautiful woman talking with Eliza. It takes him a moment, but he realizes that it is the same Lilly he had spoken to all those years ago at the party. Roman ends up dropping the box, and shatters the award that was in there. Lilly feels guilty, and is determined to fix it. After all she loves to craft! What happens next is friends who start to fake date, only to realize that they've fallen for each other. But of course their relationship isn't drama free.

Jock Romeo was a cute college romance. I really enjoyed the way this book started. It gave us history to the characters, and honestly I was rooting for them from that point on. The way Sara Ney incorporated Ashley and Jack into the story was an added benefit. I happen to be one who likes it when former main characters make appearances in other books. It's the familiarity. The second introduction between Roman and Lilly was definitely a bit awkward, but it had that cute rom-com vibe to it. These characters on their own are great, but together it makes them so much better. Especially since Lilly is an extrovert, and well Roman is a homebody and introvert. So it gives that nice balance. The way their relationship started, and how Roman took care of Lilly, was so good. The fact that he had no issues bringing her home (as a friend) to enjoy a meal with his family, was nice. It was also the perfect set up for the fake relationship to begin. Also, I LOVED Roman's family. His Aunt was hilarious, and added some great comic relief to this book. Now I will say that the dramatic moment wasn't all that impressive. I'm so used to reading these big explosive situations that this one just seemed extremely minor. BUT this moment fits with the characters. So while I would have preferred something a bit grander, it is what it is.

One other thing I want to mention is regarding this book fitting into the Jock Hard series. I'm struggling to see how it fits. The only way I can make it fit, in my mind, is that Lilly is the "jock" since she is a cheerleader.  It works. She's definitely a spectacular athlete. The reason I say I struggle to see how this book fits in is because in the previous books the male has always been the "jock".

Like I said, the story was cute. It was an a quick, easy read, and I was able to return to a familiar setting. If you like new adult romances with a college setting, then give Jock Romeo a read.

Thank you for reading my thoughts,
Laura

HE IS THIS STORIES LEAST LIKELY ROMEO.

Roman Whitaker is every girl’s best friend. An easy going nice guy, Rome is brilliant and funny. At the age of twenty-two, he’s moving out of his parents’ house for the first time and into off-campus housing with two complete strangers.

No more Mister “Playing it Safe.”

Rome may be wicked smart, but math and science will only get him so far, and they certainly won’t land him a first date with the girl of his dreams.
