10 of My Favorite Brother's Best Friend Romances

It should come as no surprise that I ADORE the Brother's Best Friend (and/or sister's best friend) trope. I've spoken about that
before. Maybe it goes back to the fact that I grew up with two older brothers, and had a crush on a few of their friends way back then. That could play a small part in it. Maybe. No matter what though I'm obsessed and I find myself gravitating toward those stories. I think another part of it is similar to the friends to lovers trope. It's this person that you know, that you see on the regular, and an attraction just builds, or has the potential to build.

As brother's best friend is one of my top three favorite tropes I figured I'd share a few recommendations. Those that I selected are 10 of my favorite books that feature this trope. Of course there are other tropes that these books fall into as well, but I selected them for the brother's best friend trope. (psst: one is actually a sister's best friend book.) Be proud of me, I only shared 3 hockey romances. In all reality I could have probably had an entire post dedicated to hockey.

Have you read any of these titles? Do you have any recommendations for the brother's best friend trope? Fill me in on your favorites!

Happy Reading,
Laura

Rescuing Broken by Gina Azzi {a review}

Even though I don't want him to, Jaxon Kane has a claim on me I'll never be able to shake.

Back in January 2021 I read my first book written by Gina Azzi. That book was The Sweet Talker, and I was instantly hooked. Yes, part of that may have been due to the fact The Sweet Talker is a hockey romance. However, it was Gina's storytelling, and characters who truly pulled me in. It was that combo that had me returning time and time again. In May of 2021, I downloaded Rescuing Broken. It sat unread on my kindle until now. This weekend I finally picked it up, and I didn't put it down until the story was over. Curiosity got the best of me, and I dove into this 2018 release.

My rating for Rescuing Broken:

Rescuing Broken was not at all what I was expecting. I had been expecting a standard romance with steamy moments, as that's what I've experienced with other books by Gina

Rescuing Broken is a second chance romance that has our couple reconnecting after 7 years apart. Except during those 7 years, life has not been easy on either. Jax is healing from his physical combat wounds, and also working through the mental wounds. All that while trying to adjust to being out of the military, and returning home. As for Evie, she never left town, and isn't the same woman that she was. She gave up so much after Jax left, and not necessarily by choice. She wants to move forward but feels stuck at the same time. Jax returning home isn't helping matters at all. Jax might just give her the push she needs.

There was so much that happened in this book, and so many revelations made. I could tell almost immediately what had happened with Evie after Jax left. But it wasn't until later in the book that my suspicions were confirmed. That build up just made it all the more emotional.

The way Jax "handled" Evie, and worked toward being in her life again was something I appreciated. He was watching her body language, figured out that something happened, and was making sure she knew he was by her side. Jax knew that with time Evie would tell him, and that he would do anything to protect her.

I loved the way trust was reestablished, and their bond was rebuilt. I adored these two characters, as well as the Kane siblings. Evie's big brother also caught my eye, and I find myself wondering if he doesn't have a book as well. Now I'll have to search Gina's backlist of books to find that answer.

Speaking of those characters...I cannot wait to check out the rest of this series. I do wonder if they'll all cover the sensitive subjects, or if they'll be what I'm used to with Gina's storytelling. I mean, the Kane brothers have some history to them. Those histories make for interesting stories. So no matter what, I'm in.

Also, while the author does not have a content warning on this book, I do feel that it would be beneficial. Especially for those who have experienced what Evie did, or if it just isn't a subject matter that you'd prefer to read about. I will say that everything is carefully handled.

The ending of Evie and Jax's story had me smiling. These two have been through so much separately, and have managed to find their way back to each other. Together these two are going to have an amazing future, and continue to work through their traumas.

While I don't feel that this book would be the perfect introductory novel for Gina's storytelling, I do think that if you're a fan of her writing it's worth checking out.

I'm always up for a good second chance romance, and Rescuing Broken was just that.

Happy Reading,
Laura

Jax enlisted to protect my future. But I never escaped my past.

After seven years of silence, Jaxon Kane barrels back into my life like he never left. He’s a hot, confident, fearless soldier, bearing new scars on top of old hurts. Jax isn’t the same man I fell for in high school. But I’ve changed too.

Now that our paths have crossed again, I can’t avoid him or dodge his questions. The harder he pushes to understand me, the more I resist.

Too broken for second chances, I know better than to let him in. If he learns why I never left Georgia, will he forgive himself?

If he discovers my secret, will he forgive me?

Playboy's Reward by Gina Azzi {a review}

Damien Barnes is more than distracting. He's downright captivating and he knows it.

It is release day for Playboy's Reward! This is the fourth book in the Tennessee Thunderbolts series from Gina Azzi, and I am loving it. This book may start off as a fake relationship, but it quickly moves away from that. These two neighbors are blurring those fake lines, and falling hard for each other. That is until insecurity rears its ugly head, and puts up a giant roadblock.

My rating for Playboy's Reward:

Gina Azzi continues to pull me in with her storytelling, as well as the characters she creates. From the Hawks, to the Thunderbolts, to all the other characters Gina has created, I cannot get enough.

We first meet Harper at her apartment where she learns her mother has already RSVP'd Harper for her 10 year high school reunion. Harper has been avoiding that, and does not want to attend. Especially since her ex-boyfriend, and ex-best friend will both be in attendance. Harper doesn't want the drama that will surely happen. It is shortly there after when Damien casually throws out that he'll go with her as her date. What started as a neighbor helping a neighbor by being the date for a high school reunion, quickly morphed into an actual relationship. Could this fake turned real relationship survive? Or would it go up in smoke before it has any true potential?

I loved this story. I loved the characters. I loved everything that they had to go through to get their happily ever after. I loved the community that Harper eventually found, and the support system that established itself. I loved the 180 that Damien's family did. I loved the banter between Harper and Damien. Sean is pretty much the worst, and has some entitlement issues going, but he's the ex for a reason.

Speaking of Sean...Every scene that he appeared in had me cringing. There was just something about him that didn't sit right. Thankfully the right people were by Harper's side to shut him down. As for Harper's best friend, I'm glad that closure happened there. Can that friendship be reestablished? Only time will tell, but I have hope for them both.

Then there is Damien's family. That was a really interesting dynamic. There was a lot going on there, and I don't think we even delved into the majority of it. Clearly there are some family issues happening. From miscommunication, to substance abuse, to a marriage in trouble, to high expectations, and it could have been so much worse. Yet the family found their way out of that hole, and have come out the other side.

You may notice that I didn't say a whole lot about Harper and Damien directly. It's hard to put them into words, as they just fit perfectly together. They are both hard working, driven, passionate, determined, and not willing to put up with much BS. Now are they my favorite couple of the Thunderbolts fandom? No, they're not. But they are still wonderful. (My favorite Thunderbolts couple is currently Maisy and Axel from Brawler's Weakness.)

Throughout Playboy's Reward we frequently were surrounded by players from the Knoxville Coyotes. Now I have to know if Gina Azzi is going to write the Coyotes series or not! I mean we've met numerous characters, and it just feels as though the stage has been set for us to stay in Tennessee but switch sports. PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE! THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN! I will scream about it until it becomes reality.

Head over to your preferred e-book retailer and read Playboy's Reward. The story is good. It's friends to lovers, it's fake dating, and it's hockey romance! It's delightful. Oh, and did you know that the cover model for this book is Gina's husband? It is!

Happy Reading,
Laura

It was supposed to be a favor between neighbors…

When sexy-as-sin Harper Henderson launches profanities into the night sky from the balcony below mine, I intervene. I volunteer to be her date to her ten-year high school reunion. I may be a professional hockey player with a playboy reputation, but I’m also a good guy and I make an exceptional plus-one.

Being Harper's fake date is easy. Pretending not to fall for her when our innocent kisses turn passionate is a little more challenging.

But when Harper returns the fake date favor and accompanies me to my parents’ anniversary party, everything changes. She garners my dad’s respect and eases the familial pressure I drown under. She makes me crave the things I used to laugh off.

Tangling up with Harper was supposed to be a fun way to pass the summer. So, why does it feel like she’s the real prize? The elusive, fleeting kind of real I’ve avoided for years?

And how can I prove that this playboy wants a different kind of reward? One that sounds a lot like commitment…

Hot Shot's Mistake by Gina Azzi {a review}

It's the day I've been waiting for since the Boston Hawks series ended! Today the first book in the Tennessee Thunderbolts series is released! That's right, Hot Shot's Mistake is officially available. If you've been missing Gina Azzi's hockey romances, then run to your favorite book retailer and grab it. You're going to enjoy Mila and Devon's story.

So if you read The Score Keeper, you know who bought the Tennessee Thunderbolts organization. You also know who is the coach, and we see the coach appear a few times within Hot Shot's Mistake. I love that tie back to the Hawks. The only way this book could have been better is if it was a Hawks player who had been traded to the Thunderbolts. But Devon was a good starting point too. There is no real need for me to recap this book, as the teaser does an excellent job. So let's dive into my thoughts.

I have been so excited for this series to begin, and immediately dove into Hot Shot's Mistake. Mila and Devon's story was so good! I did not want to put the book down, and when the story ended I definitely wanted more of them, as well as the team. So that's a good thing since this was the first book in the series.

Devon has a chip on his shoulder, and is not thrilled to be in Tennessee. First chance he gets, he's out. Devon's goal is to get back to New York, or even California. He just does not want to be here, and his attitude shows it. Getting out is his plan until he meets Mila.

Mila is healing from heartache. She's grieving not only the loss of her parents, but the loss of the relationship she had, and the job that she loved. She has lost so much. Especially since that relationship loss, and job loss also had her losing close friendships. This new opportunity with the Thunderbolts is just what she needs to restart. Here with this organization, she can focus on her work, and show the higher ups that she's a perfect fit. Never was she expecting to fall for Devon.

Their road to their happily ever after was not an easy one. It was filled with drama, heartache, and outside noise. But in the end everything worked out just the way it was supposed to.

I did find myself confused by the uneasy feeling between the football team and the hockey team. That just felt weird. You would think that there wouldn't be that rivalry. Especially since they play different professional sports. I mean a state can have (and often does) multiple professional sports, and be able to support them all through the good and the bad. But what do I know...

All in all this was a good start to the new team. I will say that as much as I enjoyed Devon and Mila's story, I was more intrigued by Axel. From the moment he was introduced in the story, he grabbed my attention, and did not let go. Thank goodness his story, Brawler’s Weakness, is next! Oh, and there's Axel's daughter...my gut tells me she's going to wind up with one of Axel's teammates, and that it is going to be drama filled. I'm here for it.

Bring on the Thunderbolts!

Thank you for taking the time to read my random thoughts on Hot Shot's Mistake. I am hooked on Gina Azzi's hockey romances, and for good reason. So many amazing tropes are covered in these books, and I find myself wanting to escape into these worlds often to reconnect with these fictional friends. Go pick up Hot Shot's Mistake. Also, if you're looking for another hockey romance where the player fall for the physical therapist, check out Boarding by Elise Faber!

Happy Reading,
Laura

Tangling up with my new physical therapist, Mila Lewis, is a mistake. One I can’t seem to stop making.

When I sign with the Tennessee Thunderbolts, I have two goals: prove my injury hasn’t benched my career and get back to New York.

But then, I meet Mila, the enigmatic therapist tasked with rehabbing my shoulder.

With her long ponytail, professional demeanor, and girl-next-door look, Mila is nothing like my usual type.

She’s better—a good girl with sad eyes and a tragic past our small-town loves to dissect.

With the entire town up in her business, our budding connection is far from simple. I’m not staying, and Mila will never leave.

Deep down, I know I should walk away and let her find the happily-ever-after she deserves.

But I can’t. Not without showing her that it could be me.

And that may be the biggest mistake of all.

Brawler's Weakness by Gina Azzi {cover reveal}

Gina Azzi has just revealed the cover for Brawler's Weakness!

This is the second book in the Tennessee Thunderbolts series, and I don't think you're ready! We get a sneak peak at these two in Hot Shot's Mistake, and you can already tell they are going to be an AMAZING couple!

Having read Hot Shot's Mistake, I know that this is going to be an age gap romance! I am so ready to get my hands on this book, and find out everything that goes down between Maisy and Axel.

Mark July 7th on  your calendar, because that is when the book will be released.

There’s only one woman I truly care about: my daughter. Until Maisy Stratford flounces into the front office of the Tennessee Thunderbolts with a heartfelt smile and a tray of baked goods.

As the Bolts’ newest hire, Maisy is optimistic, enthusiastic, and a goddess at manifestation.

Everything I’m not.

Known as Brawler, I’m a gruff, quiet, rough-around-the-edges, NHL defenseman. I haven’t dated in decades. I’ve never been married and my daughter’s a twenty-one-year-old mischief maker. I don’t know how to talk about feelings or place my trust in the hands of a woman. Even one with a heart of gold.

With my daughter Lola egging me on, I finally ask Maisy out.

But I don’t want to be her rebound; I want to be her forever. Even if I don’t know how to tell her that. Even if she’s not ready for me.

If I’m being honest, I’m not ready for her either.

The Score Keeper by Gina Azzi {a review}

The day is here. Today is the day that The Score Keeper by Gina Azzi is available. I've been anticipating this book like mad, but at the same time, I am sad the day is here. If you do not know, The Score Keeper is the 9th, and final, book in the Boston Hawks Hockey series. I fell for this series immediately, and it's hard to believe that the journey is over.

That being said, the end of the Boston Hawks series DOES have me eagerly anticipating the Tennessee Thunderbolts series. You see there is a connection between the two that you will learn about in The Score Keeper. That connection has me giddy.

So what is The Score Keeper about? Scott Reland is the owner of the Hawks, and he's looking for love. A few years ago he had a moment with Noelle, and it has stuck with him. When he sees her at an event, he has to jump in to help her out. That leads to a conversation, which leads to her looking at Boston for another location for her business. She'd JUST be going there for business, no other reason. Especially since Scott and her dad run in the same circles. (you know since they both own hockey teams.) This age gap romance will draw you in, and hold your attention until the very end.

The Score Keeper was excellent. Not only was Scott and Noelle's story wonderful, it also has me hyped for the Tennessee series. Especially after reading what I did, and learning about the connection.

Scott and Noelle are both driven people who work hard to help their businesses be successful. Noelle is being groomed to take over for her father, but that isn't her passion. Noelle's passion is her bakery, Primrose. Baking is her where her heart is, and she wishes her dad could support her decisions. Unfortunately he has tunnel vision, and is not accepting anything except her working for his hockey team.

I absolutely loved the connection that Scott and Noelle had. I couldn't help but notice how they fit into each others lives so easily. They are both familiar with the hockey world, and everything that goes into it. At the same time, Scott knew he needed to back Noelle with her business. Helping her to succeed was everything to him. I think it also took him saying what he did for things to turn around. Did he overstep? Possibly, but honestly it was for the best.

These two did not have an easy path to their happily ever after, but once they arrived it was glorious. I am hoping that these two will pop up in the Tennessee Thunderbolt stories, but only time will tell.

Loved the story. Loved seeing the familiar faces. I am hyped for the next series. As much as I am heartbroken the series is over, at the end of the day this moment had to arrive. I am appreciative of the stories I read within this world, the characters I fell for, and the journey they took me on. I look forward to the future and the potential to see characters pop up in the future.

Thank you for reading my thoughts on The Score Keeper. I truly hope that if sports romance is a genre you enjoy reading, that you will pick up the entire Boston Hawks series, and fall for these characters the way I did. Kudos to Gina Azzi for creating this amazing world, and the characters in it.

Laura

Boston Hawks owner Scott Reland is my father’s biggest rival and the last man who should catch my eye. But when he does, I don’t look away.

We’ve circled each other for years, two outliers in a small club of NHL owners. We know the rules, manage similar pressures, and understand that this lifestyle — hockey over everything — isn’t for everyone.

Which is why I want out.

To prove to my father that I have a future beyond the New York Sharks, I score one for me and open a bakery in Boston, the city that reveres Scott.

It isn’t long until the dynamic and perceptive Hawk pursues me. And I’m entirely unprepared to be swept off my feet, cared for and supported after so many years on my own. Scott easily draws me back into the hockey life I thought I didn’t want.

But can our relationship survive the demands of this industry? Or will I always be keeping score, second to the game that dictates everything?

The Hustler by Gina Azzi {a review}

The Hustler is the eighth book in Gina Azzi's Boston Hawks hockey series, and it is now available. If you've read the other books in the series and think you're ready for Theo's (Eddie) story, you're wrong.

Let's travel to Maui for the wedding of Preston and Heather. Sofia Carpenter happens to be planning it, and her life is about to change. Sofia is engaged to Don Servino, and she works for the family's resort (Lely Prive). However it turns out that Don's family has looked into Sofia's past, and it isn't going to work any longer. Not with her dad having served time in prison. Don ends things with Sofia, but then has the nerve to ask her to stay on until the Lawrence wedding is over. Flash forward to the week of the wedding. Sofia is out for a swim, and Theo is out surfing. Sofia catches his eye, and Theo is entranced by her. He cannot turn away.

She's an anomaly in a paradise filled with beauty, laughter, and excitement.

The night before the wedding, Theo finds her again, and he's determined to meet her. They strike up a conversation, and that leads to a night spent together. Theo asks her to be his plus one to the wedding, and Sofia agrees. That is until the next morning when she finds out Theo Lawrence is really Eddie Sims. He lied to her. Or did he? Sofia's been hurt in the past, and she's struggling with this. So she leaves a note saying goodbye. Except it isn't goodbye, as Sofia will soon learn when her brother (Jesse) is traded to the Boston Hawks organization. Sofia and Theo are about to get their second chance. But will an issue from the past come back to hurt their chances for a happily ever after? Also, will Theo tell his teammates who he really is? They know Eddie Sims, can they accept him as Theo Lawrence? Will they feel betrayed?

Gina Azzi gutted me with this book! Oh the emotions.😭

Having read the description for the book, I wasn't certain what was going to happen. I was NOT expecting Sofia and Theo to meet at Preston's wedding, nor was I expecting it be after Don the dumbass broke off their engagement. Basically all I knew going in is that Eddie Sims was going by an alternate name, and I had no clue why. Well now I do! Of course I also knew that Sofia was a cancer survivor, and that experience had shaped her views on certain things.

I loved how everything unfolded with their relationship. From the introduction in Maui, to Sofia's brother being traded to the Hawks, to everything that happened next (relationship/history/family).

The storyline involving Sofia's dad, and her cancer treatment? Oh my heart. I think anyone can understand why he did what he needed to. But at the same time you can see why the other party did what they had to do. It just goes to show how messed up health care truly is. Ugh. Also, I want to say that I called this aspect of the storyline pretty early on. So throughout the story I was waiting for it to be revealed, and I was waiting to see how both parties responded to the situation. But then that next bombshell was dropped, and my eyes became extremely blurry due to the tears that were about to be shed.

The one thing I haven't figured out is where that magazine came from that allowed Sofia to find out Theo's "true identity". I don't feel like I glossed over that, but maybe I did.

No matter what, I loved this book! It very well might be my favorite out of the all of them. From their initial meeting (and subsequent hookup), to the reunion in Boston, to friendships formed thanks to the awesome wives and girlfriends, to the meeting of Theo's parents, to everything that happened next, to the revelation of the past, and so forth. I was all in.

I think I need a few days to recover from all the tears I shed. Oofta Gina's writing hit me hard with this storyline.

Go read this story! Go fall for these two, and see how being together impacts both Sofia and Theo. Because these two definitely change with the influence of the other. Also, I need for Gina to write a story featuring Jesse Carpenter. Please and thank you.

Thank you for reading my thoughts on The Hustler. I hope you'll check out this fake identity, second chance romance.
Laura

Theodore Edward Sims was supposed to be my hot summer hook-up, a stranger I slept with in Hawaii. Now, he’s my stepbrother’s new hockey teammate.

When we met, Theo was a sexy surfer in Maui, riding waves by day and rocking my world at night. After being played for a fool by my ex-fiancé, Theo proved to be a source of instant gratification.

He was refreshingly honest, engaging, and incredibly charming. Theo built me up when it felt like my world was crumbling down.

Turns out, he’s just like my ex. A liar.

To avoid the gossip of my failed engagement, I hightail it to Boston, where I’m forced to cross paths with a new version of Theo, aka Eddie Sims, Boston Hawks right wing. Here, he isn’t the well-connected, alluring surfer but a determined, angry hockey hunk with something to prove. Especially to me.

Except I’ve written him off. Once a liar, always a liar.

But Theo isn’t backing down. Instead, he’s hustling for my forgiveness.

If I give him another chance, will he live up to his apologies? Or am I just lying to myself?

A total Jersey girl at heart, I struggle with insatiable wanderlust and currently reside in Ontario, Canada with my family.

When I’m not dreaming up storylines or writing all the words, you can find me hanging with my littles, attempting to bake, or planning my next adventure.

Connect with me on social media or at ginaazziauthor@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you!

Happy Reading!

Xo,

Gina
