It's been a while, and I've found myself missing this space. This place where I can share my thoughts on books, about the series I love, the characters I have fallen for, and everything else that I love about books and reading. Not to mention it is a place where I can share my love for different tropes, and perhaps suggest books by said trope.
So what's been going on in my life? Well there's raising my kids, reading plenty of books, listening to some amazing tunes, and working. To be honest when I started driving for doordash, ubereats, instacart, and shipt back in October, I wasn't certain how long I would continue with it. Yet here we are, and I am still loving it. I find myself working more than I want some weeks, but at the same time it is necessary because bills. Oh adulting is fun.
While I've been away from my little blogger home, I've been on and off of my Facebook page. I share book promo there, as well as fun book memes and graphics. What I haven't been sharing lately is my reviews. I don't know why, but Facebook just doesn't fully feel like the place for that. Yet I want to write about the books I've read. Share about those characters and the things they had to deal with. So that has me coming back to my home. A place where I can write freely so to speak.
Now am I going to be jumping in full blast? Probably not. But I will be dipping my toes in, sharing bits and pieces as I go. Hopefully by summer time I can be back into the groove. Find that sweet spot, and the balance between it all.
If you're curious what I've been reading lately, then head over to my Facebook page, or follow me on Goodreads or Bookbub.
See you all soon.

Happy 2024!
Time for a bit of honesty. A raw conversation so to speak. 2023 was a strange year for me when it came to social media. I was finding myself a bit lost, and wondering where I fit in. The book community continues to grow, yet I felt lost, stagnant, and uncertain. This place has always been accepting, yet my socially awkward self was doubting it all. I couldn't see how I could anything new and/or beneficial to the community. I decided to shut down the What Laura's Reading blog, and focus solely on Facebook. Well, I didn't like it. Not at all. It just felt like I was posting nothing but promotional material. I was still losing myself. Losing that online voice. I tried rebranding as My Fictional Favorites, and it just wasn't right. The spark was missing, and it didn't feel like home. Plus my original name kept calling me back! So I figured January 2024 was the perfect time to return.
That's right, 2024 is the year that I return to What Laura's Reading. Where I return to share my reviews of the books I read, a list of the books I want to read, random book tags, where I share my "a series conversation" posts that I tried to start on My Fictional Favorites, and where I share other bookish content. I'm returning to the content I love, and I'm excited.
Please be patient with me as I get back into routine. I'm ready to begin this adventure again after a lengthy break.
Let the bookish talk resume!

Find me on Facebook!
You may have noticed that I've been missing here on the blog. A lot of that has to do with my kids being home all day every day for summer vacation. I know, trust me. My attention has been pulled elsewhere.
That being said, I've made the decision to close down the blog, and move it all over to Facebook. So please come find me there. I'll be sharing book teasers, cover reveals, new releases, reviews, and of course memes/graphics.
I also have my instagram. Have I been posting there? Well no, but I am going to change that.
Thank you for your support here on this little blogspot domain.

Hate You Always by Jennifer Sucevic {a review}
Have you ever read a romance novel where the heroine has a bucket list that she wants to complete, and the hero steps up to offer assistance? If not, allow me to introduce you to Hate You Always by Jennifer Sucevic. This is a college sports romance that just released on May 26, 2023. It tells the story of Juliette, Ryder, and her long forgotten list.
Juliette is a very relatable character. I personally loved that she wasn't into the party scene. Juliette's degree choice was impressive. I can honestly say I wasn't expecting her to be pre-med, but it fits. I also loved the friendship that she and Carina had. When it comes to Ryder, Juliette acknowledges the pull, yet she is fighting it tooth and nail.
Ryder is everything you want in a hockey romance book boyfriend. He is simply the best, not to mention protective, and he is going to get the girl. The storyline regarding his last year of college hockey was an interesting one to read. Seeing him struggle was not my favorite. Add in that certain teammate, and I understood what he was dealing with. I do wish we had gotten closure with that character.
Loved this romance, and the journey through the bucket list. Also, that pool scene?!? OH MY! I look forward to returning to the Western Wildcats for additional stories. Especially Carina's.
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts on Hate You Always. Please let me know! I'd love to chat with you about the book.
Off-Ice Collision by Cali Melle {blog tour}
One moment in time, one freak accident, and my entire hockey career was over.
Off-Ice Collision, an all-new grumpy-sunshine hockey romance from USA Today bestselling author Cali Melle is available now! Want to read my review on the book? I posted that yesterday, so please visit that post!

Vaughn
One moment in time, one freak accident, and my entire hockey career was over.
Two years have passed since my injury and I am still mentally struggling with this loss.
Mad at the world and everyone in it, I sought solace at my parents' lake house for the summer.
It was supposed to be somewhere for me to be alone and heal.
But when London Hayes walks back into my life, the universe has different plans.
And I need to find a way to derail them because I refuse to drag her down with me.
London
It had been over two years since I'd last seen Vaughn Carter.
And he feels like a stranger.
Cold and distant, abrasive and angry.
He’s a shell of a person compared to the version I used to know, but I know he’s still in there.
Somewhere deep inside is the boy I used to love, but he needs help finding himself again.
And I won’t be the one to give up on him, even if it costs me my own heart in the end.

Start reading today!

"London Hayes needs to learn to stay as far away from me as possible. Because I will only destroy her in the end."
“He really believes he's broken beyond repair. And I'm here to show him he's wrong."
"We all have scars, Vaughn... They become a part of us and mix with the beauty. There's nothing ugly about them at all."
“I want to fix you.”
—“I’m broken beyond repair, baby.”
"Who the hell am I anymore? I don't know who I am without hockey."
"You're Vaughn Carter. One of the funniest, sweetest people that I've ever met," she says softly as her fingertips trace invisible patterns along the back of my neck. "You just have to let me in so I can find you."
I swallow. "You belong in the light, not the darkness."
"I'm not afraid of it," she breaths, her breath fanning across her face. "I'll follow you into the dark."
“Maybe I don’t like talking to anyone but you.”
Strong and steady, like an anchor that holds a boat from drifting out to sea during the darkest storms.
London Hayes is my anchor...
As long as I don't fray the rope that holds us together.

Off-Ice Collision by Cali Melle {a review}
Vaughn arrived in Stillwater Lake as an injured person. Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. I fully believe that this is where he was meant to be in this season of life. Stillwater Lake would bring healing. What happened in this little lake town gave him everything he could have wanted, even though he wasn't expecting any of it.
I'll be honest, I thought I would cry a bit while reading Off-Ice Collision. I remember when the accident first happened, and how shocked I was. So I fully expected to have some tears going down my face while reading Vaughn's version of events. I say all of that to say, no actual tears fell. Were there some in my eyes? Well yeah there were, it goes with being an emotional person/reader.
This series may be complete now, but I know Cali Melle has many more wonderful stories (and characters) to come. I look forward to reading each and every one. Chances are I will fall just as hard for the newbies as I did the OGs.
If college hockey romances are something you enjoy reading, or even if you just like the new adult genre, then give Off-Ice Collision a read. You don't NEED to read the other books in the series, but it would help to know backstories and relationships.
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts. If you read the book, I'd love to know yours as well.

Scoring the Player by Rebecca Jenshak {a review}
It's time to return to Valley U, and check in on our favorite Campus Wallflowers! Scoring the Player by Rebecca Jenshak is the third book in this series, and you are not ready for Dahlia and Felix.
What to expect:
- College Setting
- Sports Romance
- Fake Dating
- Opposites Attract
- A Viral Video
- Dual POV
Dahlia has had a crush on Felix for a while now. The problem is that she struggles to talk around him, and just becomes really awkward. She basically makes a fool out herself anytime Felix is around. Is it intentional? Absolutely not. Dahlia gets flustered. Plus she's a quiet, quirky person. I can relate to Dahlia completely. I was that way. In many circumstances I still am. I think that's why she's one of my favorite heroines that Rebecca has created. (or at least that I've read.) That awkwardness doesn't stop Felix though. He's drawn to Dahlia. He wants to get to know her. He wants to hang out with her. After that video that went viral, he's now determined to help her. What better way to protect Dahlia, than to fake date. I know, I know. However in Felix's mind it works. So a plan is put in place, and this will definitely benefit our girl Dahlia who is lacking experience.
One thing I really appreciated about Dahlia was the fact that she didn't leave Jane behind. It would have been so simple to do since she had Felix in her life. Yet that isn't who Dahlia is. She loves her friends, and makes sure that they are included whenever possible. Of course it helps that Jane will insert herself where she can, as she doesn't want to be alone. When it comes to Felix, Jane is pushing for this relationship to happen. She can see the attraction between the two, and knows her friend can be a bit skittish.
Felix is one of my favorite heroes that Rebecca has brought to life. This man may be all about football, but he is also 100% a protector. I appreciated how quickly Felix's friends accepted Dahlia into the fold, and how they fell for her as well. Based on Felix's ex, that isn't the norm for these guys. Then there's Felix's sisters who latched onto Dahlia immediately. They know when a person is trustworthy, friendly, and they can see something in her that their brother needs.
I loved the relationship between our hero and heroine. While it may have started off as fake, feelings were quickly caught. That little break that they took was the perfect opportunity for them to realize their feelings, and act upon them. Also, that ending? PERFECT! But it also has me wondering if a spinoff is about to happen. Maybe? If it does, I will absolutely read it. I mean look what happened when Wildcat Hockey happened after Johnny's story.
Felix and Dahlia have stolen a little piece of my heart, and I loved their story so. That being said, I am beyond excited for Jane's story. We were given a bit more insight into her past, and I was not expecting that! I need to see who she is going to end up with, and the wild journey that will take place.
If you haven't checked out any of Rebecca Jenshak's books, you need to. I loved her Campus Nights series, this Wallflowers series, and of course the Wildcat Hockey series.
Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts on Scoring the Player. I do hope you'll read the book, and fall for these characters like I have.

Crushed by Elise Faber {a review}
It's release day for Crushed by Elise Faber!! If you know me, then you know how much I adore the Gold Hockey series. I have read each, and every, book. Not only that but I have fallen HARD for the characters. This found family is one of my absolute favorites. Gold Hockey will always have a place in my heart as it is just simply wonderful.
With Crushed being book 18, it makes me wonder how much longer Elise Faber will continue on with the team. We've already witnessed many retirements, and there is a big one looming. I also am curious as to how Elise will handle Brit's retirement. That's been alluded to a couple of times now in different stories, and I'm not ready for her to retire. Her story was the first!
Will and Lily's story was enjoyable. Yes there were tense moments, steamy moments, as well as plenty of laughter and tears. These two have known each other for so many years. After all it was when Lily was 12, and Will was 16, that this crush first developed. Will squashed it then, and is still trying to put his distance to this day. Yet having Lily live in the same city, work at the same place, and become friends with the same people, it's getting more difficult to ignore any attraction. Plus Will needs to work through the mental hurdles that he has when it comes to Lily. Yes, she was like a sister to him all those years ago, but she's grown up. Maybe it's time to look past what used to be, and look toward the future.
That third act breakup was a doozy. I knew a breakup was coming, I just wasn't sure how it would play out. Especially since a breakup had been thwarted previously. When all of it did play out though, I wanted to knock some sense into the character. Yes it was a protective measure. Yes they thought they were doing the right thing. But clearly they were not. Now the reunion? Perfection. The grand gesture? FABULOUS!
I also loved that we started to get the lay of the land for the next book, Changed. You already know I'll be reading it. Heck I have it preordered! Lucas and Maddy's story will be filled with enemies to lovers, hate to love, frustration, and realization. I am here for it! Now to wait until the end of August to read it.
Real quick note about the underlying storyline in Crushed. If you read the news reports a couple of years ago about the US gymnastics team, and the doctor- something similar plays out within this book. You don't see any of it, or really hear any of it, but it is a big part of Lily's story. There is also mention of a character succumbing to self harm. I mention this, because if those topics are things you want to avoid, then this might not be the book for you. I will say that the self harm is a small part of a chapter, whereas the other part is an undercurrent throughout.
Have you read any of the books in the Gold Hockey series? How about the Rush series? Breakers Hockey? I haven't read any of the Breakers hockey books, but they are on my kindle waiting for me.
Thank you for reading,
Laura

Watching Trilogy by Bethany James {a review}
During my time away from my blog, I read so many books. I pretty much owe you all a giant wrap up for all the books. Three of the books that I read were part of a trilogy by Bethany James. These books were recommended for people who enjoyed the Salacious Players Club by Sara Cate.
When I started this trilogy I wasn't completely certain what to expect. The author had said that it was light on the drama, and heavy on the spice. So I kept that in mind. What the author didn't say is that there is virtually no plot to these novellas. If you're looking for a lot of spice, then pick up this trilogy.
The Watching Trilogy follows the relationship of Jack and Celia. They met at a coffee shop, and began a whirlwind romance from there. The first book, Watching, is very insta-lust. No I didn't mean insta-love, I said what I said. In this book is where we also meet Drew and Elle. They appear in all three books to various degrees. Jack is already friends with them, but Celia is just meeting them. It is quite the introduction too.
Book two, Watched, shows our couple a few weeks later. A proposition has been made, there has been a revelation about an unknown connection, and the couple has to figure out how to move forward. Once again this book is heavy on the spice, and light on the plot. I actually wish there had been more plot in this one because of the bombshell revelation. I wanted more insight on that, and to see how the other person responded and/or communicated.
Book three, Watch, has Celia meeting Jack's family, visiting a club that is similar to SPC, and figuring out how to respond to that second proposition. It is at the club where they have an experience that Celia probably thought she'd never have. Upon returning home they deal with that proposition. Again, no real plot.
If you are looking for a trilogy that is heavy on the steamy scenes, and extremely light on the actual storyline, then you should consider reading this trilogy.
Honestly I enjoyed it for what it was, but it was nothing more than a 3 star read. That's just from my perspective though, and you may rate it differently.
Have you read the Watching trilogy? If so, what were your thoughts, and rating? I'd love to know.
Thanks for reading,
Laura

What I Read Last Week
Happy Monday, wait no I mean, Wednesday. HAPPY WEDNESDAY! Somehow the week got away from me, and I'm sharing what I read last week a couple days late. I prefer for these posts to go up on Mondays, but life happens.
The Stopover by TL Swan
The meet-cute for Jameson and Emily was fantastic. Add in their one night together, and I was instantly hooked. I wasn't expecting the time jump, but it made sense. I loved that Emily stuck with her plans to work for Miles Media, and that it all worked out for her. Who knew that was when she would reconnect with the mystery man from a year ago. The storyline that was happening outside of the relationship had my curiosity immediately. I was trying to solve the case on my own, and failed. But that's okay because I loved all of the action. There were a few scenes that caught me off guard, and I enjoyed that. As for the relationship between our main couple, I liked them together. They just worked. Now there were times that Jameson made me angry, but that gruff persona is what he's known for. Emily wasn't perfect either, but that's what made them work. Loved the story, and will definitely be continuing on with the series.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Rating: 5 Stars
The Sneak Peak by Victoria Wilder
The Sneak Peak was my introduction to Victoria Wilder, and OH MY WORD, I will be back for more. I am 100% a fan of the Riggs family. Michael and Grace were fantastic. Loved the kids. Loved the friends and family. The antagonist was enjoyable, even if they did make me want to scream. The Sneak Peak really showed the connection that these two had, and how they were always meant to be. Life may have put them on different parallel paths for a bit, but once that shifted all bets were off. It was a collision of epic proportion. The romance was so good. The spice was intense, but oh so good. This book was full of emotional moments, and I was rooting for these two the entire time. Also that scene at the tree lighting ceremony? YES! LOVED IT. Full circle moment.Rating: 4.5 Stars
On the Line by Julia Connors
Jameson Flynn just might be my favorite hero out of the series. I love how protective, caring, and supportive he is. Honestly he is the perfect person to be by Lauren's side while she grieves. Lauren impressed me throughout this book. Yes she was grieving the loss of her husband, but at the same time she was making necessary changes in her life. She was growing. She was determined to come out of this stronger than ever.
Absolutely loved the relationship between these two. The friendships that were formed made me smile. Jameson's sisters are AMAZING. Oh, and that moment of conflict? WOW! Could not put this book down, and I look forward to the future stories Julia writes.
Have a good rest of your week.
Laura
