10 of My Favorite Brother's Best Friend Romances

It should come as no surprise that I ADORE the Brother's Best Friend (and/or sister's best friend) trope. I've spoken about that
before. Maybe it goes back to the fact that I grew up with two older brothers, and had a crush on a few of their friends way back then. That could play a small part in it. Maybe. No matter what though I'm obsessed and I find myself gravitating toward those stories. I think another part of it is similar to the friends to lovers trope. It's this person that you know, that you see on the regular, and an attraction just builds, or has the potential to build.

As brother's best friend is one of my top three favorite tropes I figured I'd share a few recommendations. Those that I selected are 10 of my favorite books that feature this trope. Of course there are other tropes that these books fall into as well, but I selected them for the brother's best friend trope. (psst: one is actually a sister's best friend book.) Be proud of me, I only shared 3 hockey romances. In all reality I could have probably had an entire post dedicated to hockey.

Have you read any of these titles? Do you have any recommendations for the brother's best friend trope? Fill me in on your favorites!

Happy Reading,
Laura

As You Wish by Angela Quarles {a review}

As you may know, I am participating in the A to Z reading challenge, where I am doing both the title and the author challenges. One of the letters that I struggle with the most is Q. Plus knowing what my preferences (contemporary romance, maybe a little pnr) are that made it a bit difficult. So I headed to my library to see what I could find. That is when I stumbled upon As You Wish by Angela Quarles. According to the author's website, this book was originally published in 2012, and was named "Beer and Groping in Las Vegas". The blurb for As You Wish is what drew me to select this book over other authors who had the last name that began with Q. I love geeky references in contemporary romances!

Riley McGregor is a geek trapped in a Good Ole Boy body and as owner of a microbrewery, smart chicks never look at him twice.

Rejected by a geek who wanted to “trade up,” Mirjam Linna would rather immerse herself in work than be the girlfriend-of-the-moment. Stranded in a Vegas hotel, she makes a wish—a night of hot sex with the man of her dreams. It’s granted. She agrees to dinner, but afterward, she’ll say thanks, but no thanks, and see what’s on the SyFy channel. But when they meet, they’re surprised to find they had a shared connection in their past. Sparks fly as these two learn to be in the moment, be themselves and find love.

Fans of Star Trek, Star Wars, Monty Python, Firefly and Marvin the Martian will enjoy this romantic comedy.

The moment I read for fans of Star Trek, I knew I had to read this book! While Next Gen is my preferred era of Star Trek, I'll be the first to admit that Enterprise is another one that I loved. (Next Gen is all because of Capt Picard, and Wesley Crusher.)

Mirjam is our heroine, and she is currently in Las Vegas where she just attended a conference for AppExpo. Mirjam's primary focus at the moment is work. Especially since she's not keen on dating. But while speaking to Jenn, the bartender, she makes a wish, and that is when things begin to change. Next thing Mirjam knows, she's headed out on a blind date. Jenn is seriously acting like her fairy godmother!

What could be more drastic than a blind date with a stranger arranged by some unseen force using a slot machine as it's mouthpiece?

Okay my geeky Star Trek loving heart laughed at this line:

She stuck out like a Redshirt on an away mission.

Dang Jenn is pulling out all the punches to make this blind date a success for Mirjam!

Riley has now arrived on the scene, and he just felt compelled to try the slot machine where he too received a letter that had his name on it. He's up for the adventure. After all it's been over a year since his last date, and his microbrewery takes up all of his time. Plus who wants to date a geek? Jim leaves him with one final piece of advice:

"Be in the moment and you will find the answer."

Once these two meet, that was when the story picked up. We learn about a past connection, and see them start to get to know each other.  Then of course comes the steamy moments.

On to my thoughts about the book...

I absolutely loved the geeky references that appeared in this quick read. Even more so when it was Star Trek related. I also enjoyed the way these two found their way to each other. That magical element was intriguing. Who knew that a wish made in Vegas would end up this way.

That being said, I do wish there had been a better balance between the story and the steam. However the entire book is 55 pages, so there isn't really a lot of options available. Also the scenes after Mirjam received the envelope, until the time Riley received his could have been done away with. That time would have been better spent building a connection between the characters, or seeing more of their date, or even what happened after Vegas. That's just my opinion though.

At the end of the day, the geeky references were what drew me in, and really the story itself was just okay. Nothing really memorable, except maybe those Marvin the Martian boxers.

What did I rate As You Wish?
I went back and forth on this. My initial thought was 2.5 stars. As I sat with it more, I realized that 3 stars is more fitting. So for now, it's 3 stars.

Now the question comes, will I read more by Angela Quarles? The answer is potentially. I know my library has plenty of the authors books available for kindle download, so maybe. I mean, I'd be willing to read another book, but I think I would have to find a full length novel versus a novella. I need more character development, as well as more plot.

Have you read anything by this author? Have you even heard of Angela Quarles? Obviously I was new to Angela's writing, and I hadn't heard of her before perusing my library's ebook selection.

Happy Reading,
Laura

Thoughts I Had While Reading Final Offer

If you haven't heard the final book in Lauren Asher's Dreamland Billionaires series is now available! Final Offer tells the story of Callahan (Cal) Kane, and takes us on the journey of Cal making his Grandpa's final wishes happen. Of course it takes Cal back to the small town he ran from years ago, and has him returning to Lana's life. This small town, hate to love, second chance romance is going to be interesting. I don't think this happily ever after is going to be easy to accomplish.

As I did with Princess of Hawthorne Prep, I figured I would jot down my thoughts as I read the book. So if you're curious, please keep on reading. I don't think I'm giving any spoilers, but if I did, I apologize. Also if you want to read my full review, it is posted over on Goodreads.

Thanks for reading,
Laura

  • Well that was an interesting start to the story!

  • Loved how Lana put him in his place right away, and kicked him out.

  • Wonder what Grandpa Kane is up to with having Cal return to the lake house? I also wonder what his letter to Cal said.

  • Ugh I was hoping that Cal was in recovery, but based on what went down at the hotel that isn't the case. It's only a matter of time before he gets into trouble, and/or someone gets hurt.

  • That meeting with the lawyer was kind of eye opening. I wonder why that clause was put in?

  • I wonder WHY Cal has to sell the lake house. That part isn't 100% clear, or at least not to me.

  • Oofta this small town has it out for Cal. I'm not liking that one bit. Why doesn't Lana tell them to knock it off?

  • Those words that Declan spoke clearly struck a cord. Which they definitely should have.

  • Cal showing interest during that board meeting caught my attention. He clearly is interested in the company! He just downplays it because that is what is expected. It's almost as though he wants to be underestimated by others.

  • Oooh Cal's dad is the worst. He is out to hurt his son with his words, and it shows. Yet at the same time it seems like Cal is taking after him a bit.

  • Loving the fact that Lana has a plan in place to push off the sale of the house.

  • Cal isn't making it easy on her one bit, and is determined to get the job done at all costs.

  • Ahhh! Cami's birthday party! So cute, and dang that's a large party!

  • That's quite the trip he's just offered! I wonder what other things he has up his sleeve.

  • OH THAT'S WHAT IT IS! Dang he spent a lot to make this happen.

  • Loving the family reunion! I am glad the brothers are able to all get together with their busy schedules. Plus the women are meshing perfectly together.

  • Also I am proud of Cal for setting up rehab for himself, and hoping this time is when it clicks for him.

  • I feel like drama/conflict is about to happen.

  • OH NO! She shouldn't have found out like that! Poor Lana!

  • Oooh that fight was a doozy. I don't blame Lana for saying what she did. At the same time she should have listened before reacting. (in my opinion of course)

  • Rehab is going to be good for Cal, I just know it.

  • Well I did not see THAT person walking into the AA meeting! Still an ass, and is clearly only thinking of himself.

  • Glad to see Rowan made the call with the offer that he did.

  • So how is Cal going to fix all this? It seems like the odds are stacked against him.

  • Okay I'm liking this solution. I see what's happening and I approve. Swoon!

  • That board meeting was interesting. I also enjoyed what Cal had been up to behind the scenes. Underestimated as always, until he shows people that he knows what he's doing.

  • That meeting with the lawyer!!! OH MY WORD! So that just happened. It feels good to see that outcome.

  • Now that the book is over, I'm not certain what to think. I'm conflicted. On one hand I enjoyed a good portion of it. On the other I'm not sold on this couple. There are so many issues that need to be worked out. I still don't like how the addiction storyline was handled. Plus Lana didn't always it right with me. She was combative and always throwing the past, as well as his addiction, in Cal's face. Then there's the fact that Cal threw money around like it was nothing. Which I get it he has $25 billion, but dang! My mind just cannot wrap around the fact that he just spent like he did.

5 Football Romance Series You Should Read

With the "Big Game" quickly approaching, now is the perfect time to read some football romances!

If you know me at all, you know football isn't my first choice for sports romances. However I do still read them, and I have 5 series that I think you should read! You know, if you haven't already. I also want to mention that the majority of these recommendations do not have cliffhangers. I love a good standalone series where each book focuses on a different couple! That being said, the Vegas Aces series is full of cliffhangers! Prepare yourself for that because they leave you wanting. But also loving the characters.

The Playbook by Alexa Martin

Number of books: 4
Released: 2018-2020

Now I'm sure most people have read this series. If not though, I highly suggest you do! This series focuses on four different relationships. It's the meet cute, it's the adjusting to dating a professional athlete, it's the drama that ensues, the heartache, the reunion, and the ultimate fall. Each book gives you a happily ever after, and I loved all of them.

Raleigh Raptors by Samantha Whiskey

Number of Books: 3
Released: 2020

Samantha Whiskey writes some wonderful sports romances. I fell for her hockey romance series, and when the Raleigh Raptors came out, I immediately read them. Now full disclosure; Nixon wasn't my favorite. I struggled with the storyline big time. I didn't vibe with Liberty at all, so that played a big part in it all. Roman and Hendrix though, loved those two stories. I am holding out hope that Samantha Whiskey will return with another addition to the series. That being said it has been over 2 years since Hendrix released, so I'm a little doubtful.

Denver Mountain Lions by Emily Silver

Number of books: 5
Released: 2022

This series features so many different tropes! From friends to lovers, to forbidden, to second chance romance, to enemies to lovers, to age gap, there is something for everyone. I fell hard for some of these players, as well as Emily Silver's storytelling. I cannot wait to read more from her.

Kingsmen Football Stars by Piper Rayne

Number of books: 2.5
Released: 2022-present

It's no secret that I'm a fan of Piper Rayne's small town romances. So when I heard about them branching off into football, I knew I'd have to give it a read. So far I've read the prequel, as well as You Had Your Chance, Lee Burrows. I will be reading Brady's story yet this month, and I cannot wait to dive into that single dad and the nanny romance. With Piper Rayne's books, you'll get a wonderful story, a bit of drama, a good dose of steam, and a happily ever after. You may also find yourself hoping other characters will get their story told.

Vegas Aces by Lisa Suzanne

Number of seasons: 4
Number of books: 20 (5 per season)
Released: 2021-present
In 2021 I read the first two seasons of the Vegas Aces, and I was hooked. Now here's the thing, you're going to want to read these books in order. You learn things in season one that carry over to season two, and then onto season three. I will say season four is a bit different, but it still helps to have the knowledge of previous seasons in your head. Luke Dalton kicks things off with his story, and our introduction to Ellie is one you won't forget. Jack Dalton is up next, and I went from hating this man to falling for him. Ben Olson is featured in season 3, and that was by far my favorite season. Tristan Higgans is up in season 4, and a familiar face appears (and attempts to mess things up). One thing I love about these seasons is that there is always a villain you love to hate. Each season has at least one, and I'm here for it. I cannot wait to see who the villain is in season 5. (and yes, season 5 is happening later in 2023.) Prepare yourself to swoon, laugh, cry, and want to throw your kindle.

There was one other series that I wanted to recommend, but I really wanted to keep my list at 5. So instead I'll list it as a bonus recommendation. That series is The Lone Stars by Katie Graykowski. There are seven books in this series, and I enjoyed so many of them. I remember tearing up at a few, swooning over a couple, and falling hard for a few players. If you're looking for a lesser known series, then check that one out too. The first book was published in 2013, and the last in 2021. The first six are offered with Kindle Unlimited, so if you have a KU subscription consider downloading one of the titles.

Have you read any of these series? Do you have any recommendations for me? I'm always up for another sports romance to read.

Happy Reading,
Laura

What I Read Last Week

I read 9 fabulous books this week! From paranormal to small town to bully to sports romance, it was a phenomenal reading week. Plus I squeezed in a couple short stories that I found on Prime Reading. I love browsing through Prime Reading to see if anything catches my eye.

How did I manage to read 9 books? Well it definitely helped that 3 of them were under 60 pages! Plus there was one novella that was only 94 pages. So having those added in helped me out a lot.

Did you see my anticipated reads post that went up last week? If so, then you'll notice that four of these books were listed there. If you're curious about the tropes for these books, they are mentioned in that post.

What did you read last week? Any favorites? Any misses? What's on tap for this week?

Happy Reading,
Laura

Thoughts I had while reading Princess of Hawthorne Prep

I recently finished reading an advanced copy of Princess of Hawthorne Prep by Jennifer Sucevic. This is the second half of Austin and Delilah's duet, and I have been anticipating this release. The book officially releases on February 10, 2023.

Rather than doing a typical review, I thought I would write out the thoughts I had while reading the book. None of what I've shared is a spoiler, or at least not from my perspective.

If you choose to read Princess of Hawthorne Prep
(remember to start with Prince of Hawthorne Prep), then maybe you'll have similar thoughts. You may also know what scene I'm talking about with each random thought.

I hope you like this little change up when it comes to sharing reviews/thoughts on books. It's new to me, but it seemed like a good idea. Even more so since I was saying some of these things out loud.

Happy Reading,
Laura

I'm So Excited For These Books!

A new month means new releases!

These are the TEN books that are releasing in February, and I cannot wait to read them. As I was compiling this list, I realized that 9 out of the 10 books are sports romance. I'm not complaining one bit, it's just a tad excessive. I'll have to be sure to read some non-sports romance books this month to balance it out. Maybe.

Let's jump into my list.

What I Read in January 2023 {Monthly Wrap Up}

“January is the month for dreaming”
- Jean Hersey

Chapter One of 2023 has come to a close. What a month it was!

When it comes to life, January was a relatively quite month. For which I am thankful. Of course it wasn't without illness. One of my kids shared a cold with me, and I've been dealing with that for about 2 weeks now. Colds always linger with me, so this isn't surprising by any means. I'll be thankful once it is gone though. As I say that though I have a kid home with a fever. So it looks like we're taking illnesses into February as well. Sigh. I'm excited for February though. February brings on my husband's birthday, Valentine's day, and a few days off of school for my kiddos. Of course there are also about 10 books releasing that I'm excited for as well.

In January I listened to my top songs of 2022 playlist on Spotify, and loved every moment of it. That playlist is filled with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, One Direction, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and so many others. I could listen to it for hours. And I frequently do.

As for what I watched in January, it wasn't much. I did watch the Speaker of the House coverage to see who would be elected. That was an interesting time to say the least. Otherwise I've just been watching youtube videos (reading, homesteading, budgeting, various vlogs), and scrolling through TikTok. There haven't been any TV shows that I've felt the need to watch. Actually there hasn't been for a while now. That being said I will be watching this last season of The Flash. Especially when Oliver Queen makes his appearance.

This last month my reading was amazing. I read 22 books! One was nonfiction, one was a manga, and the other 20 were romance. There were two five star reads for me, and they were not from the romance genre! That's right, my five stars were the nonfiction and the manga. WHO AM I?

With my blog, I slacked off big time. Ever since being sick in December, I've been struggling. But I am starting fresh in February, and I am making plans. Look for reviews to return, maybe a book tag or two, and of course romance recommendations.

My stats for January look like this:
Books Read: 22
Pages Read: 6,054
Average Page Count: 275
5 Star Reads: 2
Physical Books: 3
E-Books: 19

Favorite Book of the month: Spare by Prince Harry
To say I had been eagerly anticipating this book would be an understatement. The day Spare was released, I immediately drove to Barnes and Noble, made the purchase, and then promptly dove into the book once I arrived home. I loved getting to hear what he had to say, and the way it was told was so easy to digest. Absolutely loved this book.

My favorite cover of January goes to The Coppersmith Farmhouse by Devney Perry. From the colors, to the design, it all just draws me in.

Here are all the books I read in January, and in the order of which I read them. If you're interested in my reviews, they are on Goodreads and Amazon.

The Great Austen Adventure by Tomi Tabb
Tempting the Neighbor by Ashley Munoz
Salutis Meae by Jocelyne Soto
Throne of Diamonds by Emily Bowie
Filthy Jealous Heir pt 2 by Caitlyn Dare
How to Lose at Love by Sara Ney
Spare by Prince Harry
Spy x Family V1 by Tatsuya Endo
All It Takes by JH Croix
Never Give Up by Rue Lennox
Resilient Reign by Aleatha Romig
Steel by Anna Hackett
The Perfect Dilemma by January James
The Coppersmith Farmhouse by Devney Perry
Out of Play by Aven Ellis
Splintered Ice by Cali Melle
Wild Ever After by Rebecca Jenshak
The Lawyer by Marni Mann
Ignite by Melanie Harlow
Not Just A Crush by Helena Hunting
Promised to the Night by Meg Anne and K Loraine
Claimed by the Shifters by Meg Anne and K Loraine

Just a note, The Perfect Dilemma by January James is available as a free download on January's website. Also Not Just A Crush by Helena Hunting was a download that she offered in her Facebook group at the end of December. It was originally part of an anthology, so there is no purchase/download link available. Sorry!

Tell me what you read in January! Any favorites? Any recommendations? Have you read any of the books on my list? If so, tell me your thoughts on the various stories.

Happy Reading,
Laura

A to Z Reading Challenge 2023

It's the end of January! The first month of 2023 is in the books, and I am in disbelief at how fast it went by. I can't be the only one.

At the beginning of the year I made the decision to participate in the A to Z challenge again this year. As we all know I did not complete it in 2022, but I made fabulous progress.

When it came to the title challenge, I missed it by 3 letters (X, Y, Z). The author challenge I only missed by 2 (I, O)

So here we go with my first check in for 2023. Once again I will be doing the title and author editions of this challenge. Let's see what I was able to cross off in the first month.

WOW! That is quite the start for the 2023 A to Z challenge! I can tell you now that not every month will have that much at once. It's easy to do at the beginning.

Just a reminder that with the Author Challenge, I will use first names or last names to complete the letter. When it comes to the title though, I go for the first letter (not including The, A, If). I may make exceptions for a few letters, but time will tell on that.

Are you doing the A to Z challenge this year? How is your list looking? Did you read any of the same books as me?

See you back here at the end of February with my next update!

Happy Reading,
Laura

2022 Year in Review

2022 has been over for a good little bit now. With my health on the upswing, I am finally able to share my year in review!

When it comes to life, 2022 was an interesting year. All in all it was just a decent year. February had the health issue with my oldest child, March was our annual trip to Wisconsin Dells, May began the remodel of our kitchen, July and August had 4 of us sick with a random respiratory illness, September marked the kids return to school which brought on a few mental health and behavioral issues during that time, and then my health issues in December. 2022 ended with us visiting Wisconsin where a fun time was had with that side of our family.

As for my reading life; in 2022 I continued to use my kindle on almost a daily basis. This seriously was the best gift ever, and one that I definitely use constantly. Goodreads and I still have a great relationship. I keep up on my reviews there, and I love the end of year stats that they roll out. Now don't get me wrong, I do have a couple of complaints with the website (and app). The biggest of which is that the page count is in accurate. I keep track of pages read, and my number does not equal their number. So Goodreads (ahem: amazon) get your stuff together. My other issue slash complaint is that I can't review all my reads on there. A lot of author freebies are not posted, so that means my end of year total doesn't match with my monthly lists. Maybe one day the app will be 100% to my liking.

2022 was also the year where I tried to focus on my blog a lot more. Now there were a couple of times that I had to take a break (summer and December), but I tried my best. I'm hoping that 2023 will have me posting here on a regular basis.

This is my third year doing this year in review! It's nice to look back at how 2020 and 2021 went with reading!

The first book that I read was Our Finest Hour by Jennifer Millikin. This was a book that I had found through TikTok, and the way the author described it just had me beyond curious. If only the hype had lived up to the promo.

My final read for the year was Hero's Risk by Gina Azzi. I am loving her Tennessee Thunderbolts series, and this story was by far one of my favorites. Plus ending the year with a 5 star read is always a good thing. Or at least in my mind.

I read 216 books this year! So I definitely exceeded my Goodreads goal of 150. Love that for me! I will say that this number is lower than 2021, but I'm okay with that. I pushed myself way too hard in 2021, so slowing things down in 2022 was a good thing.

I calculated my page total at 55,924! (Goodreads says 31,266 which is obviously a large discrepancy.) That makes my average book length about 259 pages.

My page count is slightly up from 2021, but is no where near 2020's numbers. How did I even manage 80k in 2020?

This year I chose once again to select a favorite each month. This time though, I put them into a bracket. From there it was my top 3, and then my ultimate favorite of the year.

As you can see, Obsession by K Loraine and Meg Anne came out victorious. But considering the fact that 3/4 books received a 5 star rating, I am not surprised this was my favorite of 2022.

In no particular order:
  • Gina Azzi
  • Piper Rayne
  • Natasha Madison
  • Samantha Lovelock
  • Kristin Turnage
  • Elise Faber

I felt like I didn't read a lot of "new to me" authors, but looking at this list, I did okay.
  • Jennifer Millikin
  • Kayley Loring
  • JB Heller
  • S Massery
  • Allie York
  • CW Farnsworth
  • Dee Lagasse
  • Julia Connors
  • Sophie Gonzales
  • Alison Rhymes
  • JS Wood
  • Cali Melle
  • Brooke Ramsey
  • Bianca Borell
  • Amanda Usen
  • Tempest Phan
  • Alice Hoffman

Um, as per 2021, it's Romance.

This is not new information.

Anything other than romance. 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you know me, you know that this list should be extremely long. I am an emotional person, and certain scenes and/or storylines cause me to tear up. Some hit harder than others, that's for certain.

Off the top of my head, this is a snippet of my list:

Series are my weakness!

My favorite of 2022 was The Mate Games: War by K Loraine and Meg Anne. The first book is called Obsession, and I was definitely obsessed with this series. It's why choose plus paranormal, and I could not get enough.

My reading goal is once again going to be 150 books. I feel confident with this number, and should I exceed my goal then yay for me.

Books I want to read that are not my usual reads:

As for reading challenges...I plan on participating again in the A-Z title challenge, as well as the A-Z author challenge. Hopefully in 2023 I can complete these challenges. Are there others I'd like to participate in? Oh absolutely. I have my eye on Buzzwordathon, and a few others. Time will tell though if I can follow through.

In regards to my blog, I am in the planning stages. Here's what I know as of now:
  • I know I want to write more trope posts that offer book recommendations.
  • I also have an idea for a series on book series. I even have a title in mind for it. But I'll share that once I plan things out a bit more.
  • Continue to write my reviews here.
  • I'd also like to maybe do posts on my favorite authors.

Let's talk social media...As you may know, I have a Facebook page, and I'm also on Instagram. Am I active on both? Nope. Do I  want to be? Yes, yes I do.

Here are my plans for Instagram:
  • Learn more about Reels, and post one per week. (content planning, editing, etc)
  • Post 3 photos per week.
  • Post stories 4 times per week perhaps discussing my current reads, or book hauls.

Here are my Facebook plans:
  • Share my blog posts daily whether new or older.

Last year I talked about my goals regarding advanced reading copies and I want to discuss that again. I felt comfortable with the amount I accepted for 2022. It wasn't overwhelming, and my stress was a lot less. I loved the majority of the books that I read, and have found some authors that I truly enjoy. That being said, I am thinking of pulling back again. Here's what I'm thinking:
  • Work with specific authors directly
  • Reduce PR companies I team with
  • Only choose books/authors I am passionate about vs just accepting any arc.

How did your reading go in 2022? Did you accomplish everything you wanted to? What are your goals for this year?

Happy Reading,
Laura

12 Days of Christmas Book Tag {day 12}

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: twelve drummers drumming.

Drum roll please...

What was your favorite book of the year?

Obsession by K Loraine and Meg Anne

Although really it is that entire quartet. Sunday's story, and her harem of men, just drew me in and had me obsessed from the beginning. I don't read a lot of paranormal romance, but this was one that I could not put down. Kim and Meg have a way with words, character development, and the creation of worlds that just appeals to me.
